May hog cholera outbreaks rise in town swine herd counts
Eleven hog cholera outbreaks affected 2,841 pigs in May, up from seven outbreaks last month. Dr. M. E. Pomeroy of the Division of Animal Industry urged continued vaccination and anti cholera serum use as phase three of the eradication program nears. Counties affected include Carroll, Lucas, Plymouth, Potawatomi, Story, and Washington with varying quarantine pig totals. Investigations were only partly completed, noting vaccination gaps and mixed vaccination outcomes. In May 1964, there were 20 outbreaks affecting 3,165 pigs, with officials optimistic about reducing future incidents.
