A report from Iowa State University outline FM-1445 indicates farm families spend over $1,000 on food, accounting for the largest portion of living costs and about double clothing and personal items. Total average expenditures were $4,319 in 1980, up from 4,914 in 1962, while net income declined. The study notes living costs rise with income and do not adjust quickly to income changes.

Beat the Rain And Make Hay
County livestock feeders can reduce rain damage to hay this year by using a barometer and a reliable 3 day forecast along with modern forage harvesting equipment. Exten sion Director R. W. Anderson cites agronomist Frank Schaller of Iowa State University on air pressure changes signaling unsettled weather. A high barometer implies clearing skies while a low indicates approaching rain. The common sense method is to mow hay when favorable conditions appear, typically 2 to 3 days between rains. New harvesting equipment speeds curing, with some gear saving about 15 hours. Hooray For High Water Fishing Tips
Fishing peaks during the rise after a heavy rain as streams carry food. Night crawlers on a 3-1 leader with No 6 hook work best, buried midsection to squirm. Cast ahead, reel slack to match current and let bait roll along the bottom for rapid creel growth. Nearby inlet mouths offer best fishing when lake water blends with outflow. Also notes social visits from Osia Klegeland and others in May weekend events.
