Detasseling To Add $5 Million To Iowa Economy

Iowa expects about 31 650 youths ages 14 to 18 to detassel hybrid seed corn for two to three weeks starting around July 11. The operation covers about 120 000 planted acres with an average wage of 1 40 dollars per hour. Demand is lower than 1971 due to fewer acres and more mechanical toppers, but the program will boost the economy as youth earn quick season money. Youth should register early at local Iowa State Employment Service offices as space is limited and not first come first served.
