Home Fire Damages Farmhouse Near Buffalo Center

Firefighters from Buffalo Center responded quickly to a blaze five miles south of town damaging furniture and walls at the Prette home. Mr and Mrs Prette were away and returned shortly before ten. The origin is unknown though no stove heat was involved. Neighbors aided as the fire was controlled in minutes by the Buffalo Center department.

Essay and Poster Contest Winners Announced

Last Friday afternoon the WODU committee hosted an essay and poster contest. Judges included J. E. Smith Mrs. Clark Mechem and Miss Bryden. Winners by grade and prize: 4th grade essays Valera Wells first Marl Sapp second Julia Breckunited honorable mention. 5th grade Margaret Nehring first Essie Darby second. 6th grade Robert Sapp first Zola Thompson second. overall first Ben Slater. Ostigan Wins First In Discus Event

Lawgrence Costigan, a local discus star, won first place at the Invitational Memorial Day Meet in Fort Madison on Tuesday afternoon with a toss of 181 feet 4 1 2 inches, far ahead of rivals. The victory qualifies Lawrence for the National Meet in Chicago June 16 17 where top high school athletes compete for national honors. Lawrence has dominated the state finals and outpaced winners from five Midwestern states at the Fort Madison meet, where 500+ athletes from 65 schools competed.

Buffalo Center Bisons romped to 18 to 1 win in opener

The Buffalo Center Bisons beat the Titonka Indians 18 to 1 in their season opener as John Mansson allowed one hit and received strong support. The locals posted 15 hits, and talks are under way to schedule a game next Sunday with various clubs. watch for posters.

Fishermen Trek to Northern Wilds from Kabetogama

Buffalo Center anglers depart in the early hours heading toward the Kabetogama lake region near the Canadian border. The trek is a long twelve to fifteen hour journey, with seasoned locals like D. R. Snell J. D. Lowe J. Koppen and others among the group.

Achievement Day Planned for June in Thompson

The Women's Home Project Achievement Day will be held Friday June 1 and Saturday June 2 at Thompson High School. Miss Helen Needles of the State Health Department will speak in the afternoon with Mrs Wynne Jacobs Forest City on the morning program. A picnic dinner will replace the usual demonstration with a pageant and style show tracing fashion from American Indian days to present styles. Exhibits include rem olded dresses print dresses costumes and gifts. The event showcases farm women presenting the results of a year of study to the public. Program includes community singing invocation county agent talk by Mrs Wynne Jacobs reports by Miss H A Frowlek and Bertha Vander Kraan picnic dinner 1130 p m community singing pageant style show county chorus and an address by Miss Helen Needles.

Buffalo Center High Ranks High in Academic Contest

Buffalo Center High School earned second in district and eighth in state in the Academic Contest. Twelve students qualified to represent at the State University meet June 5 and 6, with top marks across English, American History, Latin, World History, and Geometry.

Apoplexy takes woman at father's funeral

At the Congregational church in Algona on Saturday Mrs. Alice Davenport of Greeley Colorado died after reportedly fainting during her father J. W. Whedsworth’s funeral. She appeared in good health that morning and had moved to Colorado after marriage. She left a daughter and husband, and was among three Wadsworth deaths in a week.

Misfortunes for Former Buffalo Center Girl

The Richards family of Webster City endured disasters after a May tornado damaged their farm five miles south of town, wrecking most buildings and killing chickens. A few days later their five year old daughter cut her face in the yard, requiring twelve stitches and care from two doctors. Mrs Richards is from Buffalo Center, daughter of Mr and Mrs D Olaassen.

Post distributes two thousand non-game fish locally

Buffalo Center received about two thousand non game fish from Clear Lake via the State Game and Fish Department. Volunteers led by Supervisor R T DeVries and I G Pritchard hauled and delivered fish to Lakota and Rake, aiding those in need. The county meeting at Lake Mills featured speeches by Ray Murray and Bob Shaw, musical numbers, and the Thompson Auxiliary play. Buffalo Center hosted the July county gathering, with many locals attending and commending the event. The night ended with thanks to neighbors and the Buffalo Center Fire Department for swiftly saving homes from a Saturday night fire.

End of Ceremonies at Buffalo Center High School

Last week marked graduation for Buffalo Center High School with 22 graduates receiving diplomas. The event featured processional by Miss Kamps, invocation by Rev. A Howe, choruses, and a commencement address by W Hamilton.

Memorial Day Observance At Buffalo Center Celebrated

A large Buffalo Center memorial day program featured Governor Herring in Lakota and_buffalo Center. two thousand attended the cemetery ceremony after a bright morning. The color guard firing squad auxiliary and flower girls led a parade to the school for a solemn program with songs poems and remarks honoring fallen soldiers.
