Missing Henry Schol reported from front in France Germany

Mrs Henry Schol learned from the War Department that Pvt Henry Schol has been missing in action on the French German front since December 13. A letter from him dated December 18 describes rest at a camp and a bed for the first time in weeks. The notice also covers December 30 1944 military school graduations and various battalion and unit news from the Medical Department and the Palau invasion.

Winnebago County Tops State in E Bond Sales

Winnebago County finished fourth statewide in the 6th War Loan drive, raising $566,623.75 in E Bonds, 143 percent of its $351,000 quota, with county precincts and banks contributing strong totals led by Forest City and Lake Mills offices and post offices across the county.

Cooperation urged for 1945 farm census by extension director

Marvin Christensen, Winnebago County extension director, urges farmers to cooperate with the 1945 farm census. The biennial census, required by law, collects data on acreage land values crops and livestock. Information is confidential and used by the Bureau of Census to aid national farm program planning.

Clover seed tests may be completed after January 1

Winnebago County farmers who sent clover seed samples for testing by January 1 qualify for AAA premium payments even if tests are not finished by that date. County extension director Marvin Christensen notes the rule follows Iowa State College Seed Laboratory head R H L Porter’s announcement that thousands of samples flooded the lab, with about 6000 awaiting analysis. Vocational agriculture instructors and several Iowa seed companies were authorized to help run tests, as AAA payments rely on the weight of clean seed determined by authorized testing.

Three Winnebago 4-H Girls Earn Achievement Awards

Three Winnebago County 4-H girls Miriam Read Mildred Carlson of Forest City and Dorothy Finer of Buffalo Center received achievement award certificates from WNAX recent ly. The awards honor nine years of 4-H club work and the girls leadership potential. They completed courses in Home Efficiency Home Furnishing Food Preservation and Clothing.

Rev. Ezra Temple, former pastor at the local Congregational church, accepts a call to preach in a Sioux City Iowa church he served thirty six years ago. Warning against undue optimism for new farm machines

County extension director Marvin Christensen cautions that new farm machinery in 1945 will be no more available than in 1944. He argues false optimism stems from tapering wartime demands and easing rationing, adding that labor shortages and material limits will constrain production well into 1945 and that much repair work must be done on farms or in small shop setups.

The Winnebago county American Red Cross chapter will hold its annual business meeting at Thompson’s town hall next Monday evening January 8 at 8 30 o’clock All Red Cross members are invited to attend and hear reports from department heads Linden Ladies club donated 5 to the county chapter and memorials were received for Hans Monson Mrs George Albertson Mr and Mrs Valentine Kiefer and Mrs Joseph Boman. War salvage drive urges more tin cans for soldiers

Buffalo Center hosts War Production Board salvage reps urging residents to donate tin cans fats and paper to aid 2,538,264 fighting men. Two cans per Iowan could help. tins transported to Mason City for processing then to wartime suppliers. Also notes a December Selective Service Board meeting with deferment classifications and new Form 42 requirements to preserve workers for war production.
