Buffalo township voters will decide two director terms on March 13 with C. L. Peterson and Erwin Wessels seeking re election. Nomination papers due March 2. On March 27 Buffalo Center voters elect a mayor and five councilmen. City filings due March 17.
Buffalo Center High School music department presents a concert Wednesday evening March 1 at eight o'clock in the school auditorium. Beginners Band first public appearance followed by Junior Band of 27 pieces performing six selections. Girl's Glee Club sings Brahms lullaby and Send Forth Thy Spirit. Mixed chorus includes Charlotteown and an American folk song arranged by Charles Bryan and ends with Thanks Be To Thee. Senior Band of 55 pieces performs marches overtures popular selections and a saxophone sextette specialty. Two massed band numbers cap the finale with about 125 musicians on stage. Admission 25c adults 10c children.
Albert Sleper, longtime Nash agency head in this vicinity from 1937 to 1942, has signed again to handle Nash cars. The 1950 Nash is on display at Sleper Sales Company, inviting inspection of its refined body and motor improvements and new style changes.
In the state prelims at the local high school on Monday evening February 13 Myrna Kiewiet received a number one rating for her dramatic declamation Daddy Doe Violet Davids earned second for Were You There and Geraldine Beekman second for Let Brotherhood Love Continue Other schools Tioga Thompson and Buffalo Center competed Winners advance to the next state round Spring is near and painting time at John and Jerry's
Dale Hull of Iowa State College will discuss soil management and drainage at Thompson Theatre on Thursday March 2 at 1 30 PM. Dudley Weible will cover drainage laws and their impact on district drainage. D H Kreeze will join the panel. Bert Meyers elected president of the Buffalo Center Co operative Creamery board, with new officers and staff noted.
Mr and Mrs John Van Gerpen observed their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday with a family dinner at noon at home. Present were their three children and families: John Van Gerpen and family of Belmond, Chris Sonnenberg and son, and Ina Brass.
The Kingsbury Jurgens V F W Post No 4824 will hold its regular semi monthly meeting at the post rooms next Monday evening at 830 pm Clarence Akkerman Merlyn Speaker and Bud Snyder the new lunch committee made the statement that an especially inviting lunch is planned and this along with the usual amount of business to be transacted should make an exceedingly interesting meeting All members are urged to turn out and those eligible for membership are cordially invited.
Earl and Eileen Woodcock with help from Homer Elwood and Jim and Chuck Murray moved their household goods and furniture Tuesday into a newly completed home in Buffalo Center.
The Business Mens Club met at City Hall and elected 1950 officers with John Lande as president and George Beaving as secretary and treasurer. The club pledged 25 dollars to send a local Boy Scout to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge. Ray Murray was tasked to secure broader support from American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Firemen and others to fund the trip. Discussion covered highway signs to Buffalo Center, a baseball club, and summer activities with no action taken. E. E. Sapp offered suggestions for future consideration. Co B Olson introduced Wilson, manager of the local Cooperative Oil Company, and members voted him a club member.
Plans for a grade school solos contest to develop younger band players will be held at Rake on Monday February 27 starting at 2 p.m. The event features about 63 entries with 54 solos and 9 ensembles from nine schools including Manly Grafton Garner Armstrong Ringsted Scarville Thompson Rake and Buffalo Center. Students from Buffalo Center listed include Rosalie Miller Carol Jutting Leo Paul Miller Ruth DeBoer Robert Nelson Sharon Krueger and Carl Hovland. The contest targets pupils not yet eligible for state high school solos while upholding regular contest standards. Trading in Buffalo Center never hurt anybody that we know of. Try it and see.
Mr and Mrs John Gerzema to observe their golden wedding anniversary with open house for friends and relatives February 27 from 1 to 5 pm at their Buffalo Center home. They have five children Carl Lakota Mrs Harry Kettwick Mrs Tjark Krull Mrs Fred Krull and Alvin Gerzema. Married February 27 1900 at the bride’s Grundy County home. They farmed then moved to Winnebago County in 1908 and retired to Buffalo Center in 1946.
The Winnebago Rural Electric Cooperative Association of Thompson Iowa schedules its annual meeting for Wednesday March 15 at the Forest City Civic Auditorium. Earl F Wisdom of Des Moines will give the afternoon address as executive secretary of the Iowa REA Cooperatives Association. Indoor prizes totaling over 1000 dollars await at meeting close March 13. A program includes musical features and an exhibit on the care and use of electric motors. In other news farmer A C Steffensen died Friday night after his car started at a banquet. funeral services are set for Thursday afternoon with one son serving in the U S Marine Corps returning home.
Mrs. Norma Long district instructor and past grand Martha of the Order of the Eastern Star visited Rainbow Chapter on Thursday February 16 A noon luncheon was served by Mrs. Oscar Price with waitresses Muriel Elsie Drake and Martyn Beaving Decorations used patriotic colors and flowers Officers were instructed in regular work and the meeting featured an evening program Mrs. Lester Drake Worthy Matron presided and introduced Mrs Long who spoke on Chapter work for Iowa She was presented a gift and Mrs Drake received a cash gift and flowers A musical program followed with solos duets and instrument numbers led by Mrs Drake and accompanied by Mrs Clare Howe New members Mr and Mrs Dean Gilbert attended Refreshments were served by the social committee.
Mr and Mrs John Harringa and family thank friends relatives and neighbors for cards flowers letters and acts of kindness after their accident in Wesley Iowa.
The interdenominational World Day of Prayer emphasizes faith over power. Buffalo Center women are invited to the local observance at Buffalo Center First Baptist church on Friday February 24 1950 at 2 o'clock to unite in prayer with others worldwide.
Hospital notes list multiple admissions and dismissals from February including Betty Rhubee for major surgery, several births and minor operations, and patients such as Miss Gertrude Bruns, Mrs. John Korte, and Mrs. Glen Gilbert. Also mentions a trip to Minneapolis to watch Iowa U defeat Minnesota I 4 to 62, with relatives returning hoarse.
