A rural library reports on new arrivals including The Fifth Freedom Silent Spring and A Study of Communism. Seven Days in May and Letters to a Teen Age Son draw teen and parental interest. Donations and student use are noted, with cost per book cited and plans for a new Buffalo Center Library home.
Mrs Doris Cleal and daughter Nancy and Byron Boos of West Bend were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs Merle Porter. Mrs Cleal is Mrs Porter’s sister in law and Mr Boos is her nephew.
The Ladies Literary Circle met Tuesday February 12 with Eileen Woodcock as hostess Florence Sapp and Rose Schleifer as co hosts County Chairman Mrs Melvin Charlson of Forest City was a guest The election of officers produced Norma Carlson president Jan Netusil vice president Beverly Larson recording secretary Lorraine Oren corresponding secretary and Josephine Murray treasurer The program was a two book review Viola Murray spoke on The Negro Revolt and Beverly Larson on Stride Toward Freedom.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a sewing meeting on Tuesday afternoon February 19 at the home of Mrs. Chris Friis.
The Friendly Club hosted an open house bridal shower for Mrs. David Trowbridge on February 8 at the Reformed Church with about 70 guests. Mrs. John Bruhns led the program. devotions by Mrs. Jeannette Neuman. readings by several members. solos by Mrs. August Nerdig and Mrs. Ronald Olson. guild officers organized planning. guest book by Mrs. Fred Behrends and Mrs. Howard Smith. gifts by several committee chairs. decorations by Mrs. Alvin Gerzema and Mrs. Fred Kroll. serving by 12 ladies chaired by Mrs. Minnie Jutting and Mrs. Bill Harms.
Mrs Clark Mechem of Thompson was chosen for a three year term on the Iowa State Extension Advisory Committee beginning in 1963. Nominated by local staff and approved district wide, she joins a 24 member board guiding the Agricultural Extension Service at the state level and meets twice yearly to advise on programs.
A double shower for Connie Heitland was held February 9 at the VFW Hall Buffalo Center with hostesses and a short program. Guests came from Elmore, Minneapolis, Springfield and several Minnesota towns. A church shower followed February 10 at Stevens with family hosts and a Valentine themed setting. Connie Heitland will wed Harlan Melz on February 23 at Trinity Lutheran Elmore Minnesota.
A series of farewell gatherings honored local residents moving away. Attendees included William Barnes, Duey Schutter, Jim Goetz families, O M Ellingsen, Emery Rogenehaugh, and others. Gifts, pot luck meals, and card games were noted as goodbyes were exchanged. The notices also mention Carl Lerame, Ernest Eickenberger moving to Florida, and Ronald James marrying Mary Smith with family attendance.
The Bosma family moves to the former Hasse brook residence on North Main while Virgil Bosma and family relocate to the Ed Bosma farm. Carl Lemmer and family leave for Clear Lake Wisconsin to retire. Kenneth Cline stays at Doden Motel. Ronald James moves into Loren Aukes residence. Ralph Johnson and wife plan to move to the late Antje Risius residence. Card of Thanks expresses gratitude for sympathy and church help after a mother’s home-going.
An assortment of thanks and appreciation notices from families and friends. Messages express gratitude for gifts, cards, meals, memorials, and prayers received in observance of a silver wedding anniversary and following the death of husbands and fathers. Names include Rev Kots and Mrs Epko Johnson family, Pamela Behrends, Hip Loats, Otto Hanson family, Freq Hippen family.
Sincere thanks to all who remembered Gary during his Iowa City surgery and hospital stay and after his return home. Zeke and Naomi Garst, Ike and Gary express eternal gratitude for the support and well wishes received.
