Winnebago REA board approves a 10 percent reduction across all retail electric bills from January 1 to October 31, 1964. A $46,000 refund is expected this year with four months included in the reduction. Patronage refunds total $178,475.90, supported by member loans, with prior year reductions totaling $89,885.83. The agency notes electricity use enables home heating and other savings for members.
Gerda Murra earns second place in the Voice of Democracy state contest for her speech The Challenge of Citizenship The event, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, advanced from the district at Algona to the state finals where the top prize went to Daniel Lutenegger of Burton and a Shenandoah entrant won fifty dollars
Residents and relatives made memorial contributions to the nursing home. Mrs. Allen Weaver and Mrs. Adam Bell are listed among donors. More than 250 people contributed through Lyle Gerzema at the Farmers It Savings Bank, supporting the nursing board’s efforts.

The grand jury must report February 18 April 7 September and October 27 at 10:00 am.
William Huisman conducts a farm sale Wednesday February 12 at 1 00 PM two miles west and two and a half miles south of Buffalo Center. Auctioneers DeVries Brothers and Titonka Savings Bank as clerk list livestock milking gear and birds. The farm is rented by Sterling Huisman in recent years.
A Buffalo Center observance marks the 50th anniversary of the Boy Scouts with activities February 7 to 18. A meeting at City Hall February 11 at 7 30 pm aims to organize the local program and raise funds. Pilot Knob District serves Winnebago and Hancock counties with 19 units and 543 youth.
Irwin Wessels was appointed to the Winnebago County Board of Education to fill the vacancy after the death of Hen K. Hovland. He represents Election Area III, including Buffalo Center and Rake Community School Districts. Wessels previously served on the Buffalo Center Board from 1947 to 1959 and is a farmer residing northeast of Buffalo Center.
Winnebago district manager Jack Halbmeier of Interstate Power Company was critically injured Friday when his car struck curbing on a bridge and hit a semi trailer near Dubuque Iowa. He suffered multiple fractures and chest injuries and remains on the critical list. he had been attending an Interstate managers meeting in Dubuque.

Calvin Hopson, welfare director of Forest City, is charged with larceny after funds from the treasurer’s office vault were skimmed on three occasions. He appeared before a justice and was bound over to February district court, free on a $500 bond. restitution of about $500 has been made. motive not provided. He is married with two children.
Buffalo Center adds Telemate Telephone Answering Service installed by Central Iowa Telephone Company. Elmer Leibrand Livestock and Trucking and John Lande Insurance use home and office systems to record messages and relay calls when owners are away. Service aims to improve customer reach and reduce need for a live answerer.
Janet Barnes senior daughter of Mr and Mrs William J Barnes is the school's 1964 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow after achieving the top score on a December 3 1963 written knowledge and attitude exam. General Mills sponsor will award a pin and her paper enters state competition where higher honors include a 1500 scholarship and national finalist, with Britannica set to schools.

The Homebuilder's Class and Young People's Class of the local Baptist Church supported Wyma family members during their furlough, furnishing a two story dwelling and hosting a housewarming. Winnebago Fest No. 21 of the American Legion holds its regular monthly meeting at City Hall Post rooms tonight with Commander Hervey Haasebroek presiding. Plans are set for the Winnebago County Legion and Auxiliary gathering on February 13 and for the annual Fun Night. A $750 door prize will be awarded and Vern Husome will serve lunch. A Wesley Foundation student team will lead the Morning Worship at Buffalo Center Methodist Church in Ames this Sunday February 9 and stay for an afternoon program on the Christian approach to race relations. The group serves Iowa State University campus ministry and wider state church outreach, inviting all to morning worship and a carry-in dinner at noon followed by the program.
John M. Oftedahl 75 died January 29 1964 at his Mason City home due to natural causes. He was born September 21 1888 in Hardin County Iowa and retired as a corn shelter contractor. Survived by two sons four daughters three grandchildren five great grandchildren four brothers two sisters and several relatives. Funeral January 31 at Patterson James Chapel with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
