Rites Held for Theo Smith in Local Congregational Church
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Theo Smith at the Congregational church. The Buffalo Center man, born June 20, 1911 in Kossuth County, died January 25, 1929 at the State hospital after bronchial pneumonia. He married Lola Liebrand on October 5, 1930 and left a son Marvin Russell, his parents, and a brother with a sister predeceased. Burial at Graceland cemetery followed.

Tommy Snell Wins Livestock Marketing Medal in Northwest
Tommy Snell, a Buffalo Center High School sophomore, won the Northwest district declamatory medal after a string of first place wins in home, sub-district, and district contests. Ida Grove’s Richard Houlihan earned the other medal. Jefferson judges ranked the contestants with Snell taking second overall in the humorous division. The event drew about 300 attendees. next year’s district contest will be in Ida Grove with the state finals at Cherokee. A separate note announced a livestock marketing meeting on February 3 in Thompson, featuring H. C. Aaberg and I. W. Arthur to discuss selling livestock and farm income implications.

Winnebago County home project leaders welcomed Alma H. Jones, Iowa State College child development expert, for heredity and environment lessons. She described heredity as a 60-40 influence, stressing environment can enhance or modify traits, and urged training and sympathetic parenting to maximize a child’s potential. Questionnaires helped mothers assess their home environments, with resources available through Farm Bureau and neighborhood meetings.
