Shaft reapportionment plan defeated in Iowa special election

In a statewide special election, the Shaft reapportionment plan failed to pass. Turnout exceeded 466,000 with 191,000 in favor and 271,000 opposed, as rural counties largely opposed while urban centers supported margins. Governor Hughes hailed the result as a victory for the people and urged unity to pursue a fairer system. Political figures debated next steps including potential special legislative sessions and future reapportionment. The issue mirrored broader concerns about urban rural representation and court involvement in district makeup. Iowa unemployment hovered around 4 percent in October, with continued calls for policy actions.

Hog Prices Should Improve in 1964

U S Department of Agriculture economists at the Outlook Conference in Washington predict hog prices will average higher in 1964 with slaughter below 1863 levels for the year. They note a smaller September November pig crop in the Corn Belt and expect farrowing to ease through next May. Historical price swings in 1963 are cited, while sheep and lamb outlooks suggest slaughter down and prices similar to 1963 amid beef competition. Local birthday guests are listed for Titonka.
