Auxiliary Sends Gifts to Servicemen

The VeP Auxiliary met December 3 for a regular meeting and Christmas party with seven members present. Entertainment included Meredith Johnson singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Martha Johnson reciting Santa, Diane DeVries and Patty Steinberg playing Silent Night on piano, and poems read by Bettye and Carol Ankeny. Minutes were read, 46 cans of mixed milk were sent to service members from Buffalo Center, and gifts were exchanged at lunch. The group discussed Polio drive plans for January and announced a Folio film and serving calendar for 1957. A Christmas cookie lunch followed, plus Traveling Bingo and a detailed serving calendar listing members by month.

Rights Granted to Selective Service Registrants

Mr Harm W Shortenhaus, Winnchago County Local Board chair, outlines rights for registrants under Universal Military Training and Service Act and Selective Service Regulations. Rights include file examination, personal appearance within 10 days of Notice of Classification, appeal within 10 days, confidential file protection, 21 days notice before induction, exemptions for sole surviving son, access to classifications, counsel from local officials, school attendance thresholds, college induction rules, eligibility for volunteered induction, reserve service option, Civil Relief Act protections, and reinstatement after service. Woman Released From Britt Hospital After Thanksgiving Stay

A woman discharged from Britt Hospital on Monday after confinement since Thanksgiving is recovering well. Her daughter Audrey, injured in the same incident, will remain for several days and likely be dismissed by the end of the week.

Referendum Emphasizes Voting On Corn Price Support Plan

Winnebago County corn producers urged to vote in the December referendum on Soil Bank corn base acreage and price support. If two thirds back the acreage allotment, the national base will rise to 37.4 million acres with a $1.30 to $1.31 per bushel loan rate for 1957. Voting alone does not obligate planting. it signals preferred program. A November meeting at Thompson High School invites all producers to learn details and participate.

Ledyard Man Arrested On Check Charge

John B. Moulton a 38 year old from Ledyard was jailed after a Friday night traffic stop near Thompson by a highway patrolman. He is wanted at Spirit Lake Estherville Garner Britt and Blue Earth Minnesota on bad check charges. Bond set at 2000 and he faces grand jury action and further local county court appearances.

Glendon Hauskins of Buffalo Center Iowa starred as back on the USS Wren (DD568) football team which won the DESLANT Championship. The crew will travel to Miami for the Atlantic Fleet Tournament starting December 3. Hauskins is an Electrician's Mate.

Farmers to Vote On Corn Referendum in Dec

Countywide voting on December 11 in all townships of Winnebago for the corn acreage program referendum. Archie E. Anderson says voting places run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with local three-member committees at each site. Voters choose soil bank base acreages for 1957 58 59 or the old allotment plan, needing two thirds to adopt soil bank.

Car Side-Swiped Near Springfield Leaving Driver Uninjured

While en route to visit former army buddy Chuck Murray, his car was sideswiped on an icy Illinois road near Springfield. No injuries were reported, but the left side of his new car suffered heavy damage. He continued the trip and returned last Saturday.

Carl Christensen's Father Dies in Des Moines

Karl Christensen reports the death of his father, Nels Christensen, age 88, at Des Moines on Tuesday November 27. He passed away at the Methodist hospital. Funeral services were held there on Friday. Mrs. Christensen was with relatives Tuesday to Saturday. Carl was unable to attend the funeral due to illness.

Sherman Tank Memorial Placed on Court House Square

An M4A3 Sherman tank, 40 tons, was placed on the court house square to honor Winnebago County men who died in World War II. It replaces a cannon from the scrap drive, supplied by the National Guard from Iowa Falls and arranged by Forest City American Legion post leader A. R. Totten. A concrete base is planned next spring.
