Farmers hear talk on sleeping sickness in horses
About sixty farmers attended a Robbins event where Dr. K. W. Stouder, Ames Extension Veterinarian, explained sleeping sickness in horses. He described a filterable virus, mosquito and possibly fly transmission, dust entry through mucous membranes, and noted vaccines help before an outbreak but not for already ill horses. Treatments include resistant horse serum, limited stomach tube administration, and carbon disulphide for nose fly control.
