The Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service estimates 160000 sows farrowed in December 1948 to February 1949, more than double the 77000 litters a year earlier and the highest on record for the first three months of the spring farrowing season. December to February typically shows the lightest spring farrow with under 5 percent of the season.
