Allied planes bombed Viet Cong pockets in Saigon as heavy fighting spread to scores of towns along a 600 mile front. Gen Westmoreland warned the worst is yet to come and Hanoi claimed initiative in a broad offensive. Casualties ran high for both sides in this three day old campaign.
In a major move Vince Lombardi steps down tonight as Green Bay Packers coach to concentrate on club management after a storied career that made the team a national toast. Rich Allen signs a $70 000 contract with the Phillies keeping his salary steady. Spring training begins in Clearwater as Philadelphia targets top division standing. Bob Hope Desert Classic action opens in Palm Springs with Bob Rosburg and Bill Collins leading the field in the second round of the $122 000 event.

January bowed out as a cold dry month with an average temperature 4.8 degrees below normal. The warmest days reached 49 on January 19 to 21, and the coldest day was four degrees above zero on January 9. Lower Bucks saw only 2.29 inches of rain and 1.9 inches of snow, well below normal January totals.
A Langhorne man, Gil bert Stein, 59, of 840 W Maple Ave Philadelphia, was struck and killed by a car driven by Corn wells Heights resident Diana Imperial 25 at 1 40 a m on Grant Ave Philadelphia Stein lay 10 feet from the road along Quess ing Creek and was found by officers near Stevens St The driver Imperial is in fair condition at Delaware Valley Hospital Bristol with lacerations and possible concussion Police say she tried to avoid Stein lost control and swerved into the creek under investigation no witnesses exist Miss Imperial planned to pick up her mother autopsy to be conducted by the medical examiner Assistant Patrolman Frank Smith reports an ongoing inquiry
Joseph A. Keating Sr 64 longtime Republican figure and former county prothonotary died at 7 30 this morning in Abington Hospital He lived at 1209 Taylor Drive Middletown Township and moved to the township in May 1966 He named Penndel in 1947 when he was president of the borough council and the borough was known as South Langhorne Born in Philadelphia he had served in many borough offices and presided over the council since 1935 The obituary notes his retirement from politics on Jan 1 1966 and references his earlier roles in business and public service The article continues on page 23 col 1
