A costly fire in Eddy last night destroyed four buildings with losses totaling 15000. After three hours of effort the blaze was brought under control this morning, leaving six business establishments wrecked and slight damage to the First National Bank. The fire began in Woodmen's Hall.

A. A. McDonald of Hugo, a member of the University of Oklahoma board of regents, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday in a Paris, Texas hospital from complications including a heart defect. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Dr. W. B. Bizzell leads the university.
Dallas Sept. 14 M J Meyers former business manager of Baylor hospital was found guilty in criminal district court of embezzling hospital funds. The jury sentenced him to two years marking his second conviction after an earlier five year sentence on the same charge, now on appeal.
The co educational floating university on the Cunard liner Aurania for a round the world cruise this year has been abandoned due to insufficient enrollment.
For Bryan and vicinity tonight and Thursday the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with clear periods. Winds light from the south. Overnight low around mid sixties and daytime highs near eighty.
Enid Oklahoma September 14. Dr W H Bailey pathologist reports a narcotic sedative found in a syringe near the hospital room of Mary Jane Bailey 18 daughter of a minister. Garfield county attorney Dan Mitchell says he will prosecute nurse Mary Atkinson if poison is confirmed.
Victoria report notes the Texas highway commission delays a planned South Texas tour to September 26 due to a long Austin meeting. Chair Sterling says commissioners will attend a public hearing in Victoria on paving designated county highways and discuss highway types and costs with no action until after the hearing.
A 50 year old woman jumped from Goat Island bridge into the upper rapids and was swept over the American falls at Niagara Falls. A note bearing the name and address Jessie Biggar Buffalo was found on the bridge.
The ticket sales committee for The Flapper Grandmother will meet Miss McMurray tonight at 7 to outline an intensive sales campaign. Five group captains lead teams including Lichte Ayres Walton Henderson, Randoph Graham Biggs Grant, Davis Smith Ballerstedt Frances, Randolph Nedbalek Hoppess Broadway Hanneman. They are urged to meet at the Masonic Building promptly at 7 to rehearse with the cast.
Washington Sept 14 Secretary Mellon has not chosen a Republican candidate publicly but is said to favor Charles Hughes from a personal standpoint.
The Flapper Grandmother features an all star cast from former home talent groups led by Grace McMurray. Gussie Ballerstedt stars with Albert Haneman and Margarite Buchan an as Belinda Spriggens, plus Ralphena Searcy and Wesley Bentley in key roles. Forty performers include eight chorus girls and a dozen supporting players, presented by De Molays and Rainbow Girls at 8 PM on Monday Sept 19.

Dr C A Searcy attended a Hempstead Business Mens Club meeting as an honor guest with his daughter Ranphana. He spoke of Hempstead’s agricultural growth and its proximity to Houston markets, praising editor S W Adams and local business leaders for progress and plans for a bigger Hempstead. He noted his banking ties and local business stake in the town.
The Japanese home office reports 400 people dead and 2300 injured after yesterday's typhoon tidal wave in Kumamoto Kiushin. About 700 houses were destroyed as recovery efforts begin.
Rev Hugo Roitsch and son Arnold of Kurten were in Bryan today. He pastors the Evangelical Lutheran church at Kurten and has spent the summer conducting missions in nearby towns. He preached at Lebau near Giddings last Sunday and will preach at William Penn in Washington county this coming Sunday.
An Austin woman, previously employed by a business firm, is to be questioned in the University Bank robbery. James McKenzie, brother of the wounded ex soldier linked to Chief Street’s death, is brought to Austin. Sheriff Burleson placed the accused in jail as charges arise, while bank officials seek the gunman who led the daylight heist of 26500. The former employee left Austin for Houston two months ago claiming to join her sweetheart.
In San Antonio on September 14 Texas old trail drivers unveil a large memorial for pioneer freighter Amana Clark who died at 101. A red granite boulder near Austin road cemetery will bear three inscriptions and a bas relief of Clark. Funds were raised by the Pioneer Freighters Association with Col. J C McArthur directing ceremonies.
County Agent C L Benson reports from boy and girl clubs that Rye club won first place in the Howell Lumber Company contest with a general average of 95.29 for two months ending August 31. Kurten Club took second with 88.47, Prospect Club third at 85.28. Rye Club, a new organization, rose from second on April 30 to first by August 31, with Prospect and Smetana winning June 30. Two contests remain this year as Rye eyes October results.
Augusta Maine September 14 Flags of Southern regiments seized by Maine G A R groups during the Civil War will be handed to Texas North Carolina and Virginia representatives on the Capitol steps in Washington when Congress convenes in December A Maine G A R committee will oversee the transfer Governor Ralph O Brewster authorized the group to conduct the return. The Maine department G A R had passed a resolution in June calling for the flags return.
County agent C. L. Beason filed an August report to the Extension Service showing 975 miles traveled, 8 meetings with 237 total attendees, 60 farm visits, 27 letters, 60 phone calls, 70 office calls, 26 field days and 1 office day across 12 communities. Club work dominated with 11 days, horticulture seven, poultry two, entomology two, and four in miscellaneous duties.
The Census Bureau reports August cotton consumption totaled 633 434 bales lint and 73 937 linters, up from 630 553 bales lint and 73 532 linters in August of last year.
Oklahoma City report states preliminary viscera tests on Mary Jane Bailey 18 daughter of Rev. Charles Bailey failed to show any poison. Dr. W H Bailey head of a local hospital lab cautioned results are not conclusive and more tests may follow.
In Paris and across France American women establish ventures from La Guirlande in Bonaparte street to Fiza Lee’s Tea Shop near Rue Jacob and Le Petite Casserole in Montparnasse. Mrs Richard E Meyers grows La Guirlande from Russian embroidery commissions, employing thirty five women from Russian nobility, plus antiques and modern art. Elza Lee runs a popular tea shop serving hot waffles and eggs, while Le Petite Casserole draws locals with oatmeal porridge and cream.
Tony Cortemeglia filed a mandamus petition in the Texas Supreme Court seeking relief in Brazos County land promissory note dispute dating to 1918. The motion targets Judge W. C. Davis of Bryan, asking to overturn a new trial order previously won by Cortemeglia.
Tokyo reports pilots Edward Schlee and William Brock of the Pride of Detroit expect to depart Japan for Midway Island near Friday. They carry enough fuel for a direct 2480 mile flight to Midway and an extra 1400 miles to Honolulu if Midway is not located.

Rio Bravi Oil Co. abandons its third Brazos county test well two miles south of Bryan at a depth of 2700 feet where artesian water was struck. The company loads its derrick and equipment for shipment to Saratoga after fulfilling lease obligations to Brazos county holders. A deeper test of 3500 to 4000 feet is planned with hoped for prompt drilling.
Bob Irvine of Caldwell's Jewelry Store and a prominent Bryan citizen resigns and plans to move to Weatherford this week. He has resided in Bryan about 18 months and served as Lions Club vice-president and organist for local churches. He will be succeeded by A L Talley of Plainview.
San Saba Texas September 14 Fred R Brison associate professor of agriculture A and M College and secretary of the National Pecan Show to be held here November 8 and 9 has been in San Saba the past week promoting plans for the big national event Dean E J Kyle of A and M College eminent authority on pecans and pecan culture is president of the National Pecan Show and is in charge of rules and regulations for the event.
N A Stedman, 73, former State Railroad Commissioner and railroad attorney, died in Austin. Dr and Mrs J B Satterfield and their son J B Jr returned from Houston visits and are staying with Mr and Mrs J L Cox on West 24th Street and Parker Avenue.

The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce endorsed the Brazos County Singing Convention plans for an all day singing at Sue Haswell Memorial Park in Bryan on Sunday October 2. The event invites singers from Robertson Grimes Washington and Burleson counties to join. The group then visited R W Howell to express goodwill for his role in building the new La Salle hotel.
Paris reports the French reply on the tariff question will be transmitted tomorrow. The foreign office informed the American embassy that indications are the reply will not be as favorable as initially expected.
Magnolia Petroleum Company announced new crude oil prices, effective in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas, with increases ranging from 9 to 15 cents. The Dallas report notes the hikes reflect market conditions as of September 14.
Cotton futures quoted 40 to 59 points higher while local spot prices show 21 1 2 to 22 1 2 cents per pound.
