Bryan Lions Club announces a banquet to honor Fred Hale next Tuesday at 7 PM at the Country Club. The event follows discussions on the Bryan Broncos football prospects and a newly uniformed band, with Dr. R. Henry Harrison reinstated as a full member.
An estimated loss of $8000 occurred when the N. N. Snapp residence on Baker Avenue burned late Sunday night. Firemen arrived to find the house in flames as the alarm rang around 11 o'clock. The Snapps were away visiting Mrs. Snapp's parents in Henderson and returned about noon Monday.
Grace Hansen of Bryan was elected district president to fill the unexpired term as district delegates met at the K P hall for District 36 Woodmen Circle. The group planned to meet in Mart on Dec 11 and collect gifts for the Woodmen Circle Home for the Aged and Orphaned Children at Sherman.
Superintendent S. M. Brown announced unusually large gains in Bryan public school enrollment. Bowie rose to 415 from 250, Travis to 495 from 450, Kemp high to 192 from 160, and Stephen F. Austin high saw senior and junior classes rise. Four new teachers were hired at Bowie elementary.
The Stockmen's Special Committee chaired by J Webb Howell met at the county agent’s office to draft a constitution and by-laws for the recently formed improvement association. Members included Hamp Buchanan Grady Hanover and C L Benson. A called meeting with President Mit Dansby is set for September 17 to approve the document and discuss winter grazing crop plans and early stock feed. The panel also urged stockmen to exhibit their best animals at the American Legion fair.
County Attorney W R Allen and Sheriff R W Nunn investigated after workers found a human hand in a brush pile on the south bank of a creek at Texas A M College. Doctors say the bones date back eight to ten years and appear digested by carnivores rather than cut, doubtfully a current murder.
The July and August gains at the College Station post office were higher than initially projected. Instead of 44.2 percent for August and 17.3 percent for July and August combined, the figures rose to 78 percent and 49 percent respectively, according to the Eagle.
A one day district conference on homemaking education was held on the La Salle Hotel mezzanine in Bryan. Miss Ruth Huey of the State Department of Vocational Education led discussions on unit evaluations and curriculum revision roles for teachers this fall. County wide singing planned at Smetana School Sunday afternoon at 2 30 according to Alta Taylor president of the Brazos County Singing Convention. The event is a separate gathering from the regular county singing set for the first Sunday in October.
The sixth Bryan trade trip drew about 800 attendees in North Zulch for a band concert by the Bryan Municipal band and Dr Bullocks medicine show. D L Wilson and George Chance led the Bryan Chamber of Commerce with Marshall Bullock honored for trade extension. Attendees from Bryan included local business figures and bankers.
The agricultural department estimated U S cotton production at 11,121,000 bales, down from 10,267,130 last year and 1,000,000 bales below a month earlier. In New York cotton prices jumped sharply with futures rising to 12.22 cents per pound for October delivery as the market surged on the government forecast.
Reorganization of the Tabor Home Demonstration club was effected Monday at the home of Miss May Walker. Miss Jane Rudisell was named president, Mrs. Joe Locke vice president, and Mrs. M. E. Thompson secretary treasurer. The president will name a reporter before the next meeting. Mrs. Alma Metcalfe, county home demonstration agent, attended the gathering.
Bert Roe, 21, of Rock Springs died en route to Bryan Clinic after being thrown from a truck struck a Hearne stop sign. Ambulance brought Roe to Wilkerson Memorial Clinic at 2:30 Friday morning, later pronounced dead on arrival. Body returned to Hearne for burial.
A special benefit show for the high school band to fund new uniforms will be held Thursday night at Forrest Field under the Band Mothers' Club. The program begins at 7 30 and features Dr Bullock s Medicine Show the minstrel touring the area this summer. Additional entertainment numbers are planned. Tickets went on sale today with Lions Club and Rotary Club already requesting 500 tickets each for distribution.
Guy H. Deaton relocates his typewriter exchange from the Moehlman building opposite the county jail to a portion of the Lavender Beauty Shoppe facility on South Main Street.
The Dutch heir, Princess Juliana, will marry Bernhard zu Lippe-Biesterfeld in The Hague, a royal court announcement said. Juliana had previously been linked romantically with King Edward VIII of England.
Nearly 49 000 farmers, business leaders, and agricultural officials visited Soil Conservation Service demonstration projects and camps in Region 4 over the past year. J. E. Blair divisional engineer of the state highway department returned from Laredo where he represented Texas in a preliminary survey of a proposed new international bridge over the Rio Grande. Luis R. Cerdio of Mexico and Blair have agreed on plans. They will travel to Mexico City next week to confer with the secretary of public works.
Directors of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce report rising interest in merging the city and county for government. Plans include educational use of magazine material and road bond work to sell residents on the idea. A September 17 meeting with East Texas Chamber of Commerce officials is set to boost support and inform newcomers about Bryan and College Station.
