Dupree Fountain manager of the LaSalle Hotel has passed the danger point and is expected to return home within a week or two after five weeks of illness from septic poisoning and subsequent pneumonia. Mrs. James T. Rountree, state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, visited Bryan and College Station and spoke highly of the area.
Enid Oklahoma November 14 police withheld the name of a man who avoided banks by carrying his savings in a homemade bank tin can. He was arrested for a minor violation and found with 6563 dollars and a pistol on his person. Authorities detained him for investigation after learning he feared bank losses in a prior failure.
Texas distributed one and a half million pairs of 1928 auto license plates to 252 counties. The registration period opens about December 1 and closes January 1. Plates shipped from the factory to 29,000 firms, weighing forty pounds each, with total Texas auto registrations in 1928 at 1,126,982, up from 194,740 in 1917.
Mrs John E Astin and Mrs able Castles hosted a reunion with sisters and brothers. Attendees included J K Harrison and family from Houston Nava scita residents M Hettie Curry and Sol West, Bob Harrison of Bryan, Mabel Castles, and Mrs John E Astin. Port Arthur visitors Bonner Barnes and Burton Barnes also attended. Some guests returned home while Sol West and Barnes extended their stay. Bryan Boy Scouts set meeting for Thursday night November 15 at the Parish House at 6:30.
A. D. Jackson of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and Brazos River association spoke to the Bryan Lions Club about soil erosion and river conservation. He cited 1916 constitution limits and 1917 vault breakage as context for future legislation to harness water and soil. program will continue with Lions F. D. Fuller directing remarks.

President Coolidge appointed Col Edward Kreger to be Judge Advocate General of the Army with rank of Major General. He will take effect November 16 and succeed Major General John Hull.
J F B Rawcliff of Houston, vice president of Kirby Lumber Company, is in Bryan today on business. He is staying at the LaSalle Hotel and praises Bryan as a progressive growing Texas city with a splendid future.
Sun Oil Company's Brenham wildcat well produced at 4500 barrels a day through a one inch pipe in an hour long test. The well was completed Monday afternoon twelve miles north of Brenham in long explored wildcat territory. Officials expect higher flow if allowed to run freely and storage arrangements are being made using a 1000 barrel tank.
Bryan celebrates as Miss Patti Minkert daughter of Judge J. G. Minkert wins first in the Intermediate Bible Readers sword drill at Creath Brazos Association in Navasota. Patti will represent Bryan at San Angelo November 29 30 for district and state contests with the prize Hamilton silver loving cup at stake.
The Navy Department canceled its earlier order that the dirigible Los Angeles stand by at Lakehurst New Jersey for a rescue flight to aid passengers and crew of the wrecked steamer Vestris. Vice Admiral Taylor, aboard the battleship Wyoming near the wreck site, advised there was no need for the flight.
Cotton futures closed today three points higher as traders eyed steady local spot prices between 18 25 and 18 75.
Rescue ship Berlin reports Captain Wm. Carey, master of the Vestris, is dead. Alfred Duncan, second steward, says he and Carey were on the bridge moments before the ship sank. Duncan wore a life belt. Carey had none and jumped as the vessel went down.
Harlingen November 14. Bill Williams began a playful political bet by rolling a peanut 11 miles from Rio Hondo to Harlingen. He carries a placard reading At Lost and So Did Bill and will move the nut one mile each day for 11 days.
Bo McMillin, former Centre College star, bans profanity among Kansas State Agricultural College players. He treats the football field as a classroom and forbids swearing, enforcing the unwritten rule with immediate peer discipline when incidents occur.
BURBANK Calif Nov 14 One worker was killed another fatally injured and a third seriously injured when an arsenal at the First National film studios near here exploded today The explosion did not injure any actors or actresses at the plant.
The Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that the section prohibiting unlicensed merchants from aiding customers in selecting eye glasses was unconstitutional.
City Commission held an adjourned meeting to discuss the recently passed ward school bonds. A general round table review covered the bond's final transcript from election to present. Attorney General inspection and legal changes were noted as pending. F L Henderson, city attorney, departed with the manuscript to Austin.
The House committee formed last session to probe campaign contributions is to meet Thursday morning to consider charges of irregularity in Texas Fifteenth District. Chairman Lehrbach received a letter from John Garner, long-time representative of the district, to be read during the session. Chairman Steiner will confer later this week on possible further inquiry into national campaign expenses.
Robert Buckhaukts and County Agent W H Dupuy of Madison county toured Bryan today with the aim to buy more of Brazos county's registered Jerseys. The outing prompts pride in Brazos stock but questions selling prime foundation cattle to outsiders.
The Brazos County Poultry Association announces the ninth annual show in Bryan December 6 7 8. A poultry judging contest for boys and girls club members will be held with Bryan High School students invited to enter. Contestants will evaluate Barred Plymouth Rocks Rhode Island Reds and White Leghorns judged by experts from A M College with prizes hoped for.
The City Commission discussed the Lawrence cotton warehouse fire with 2400 bales lost, 1965 insured by an out of state firm. State Fire Department replies that the city’s fire record may not charge the loss if premiums were paid out of state and no local representative existed. Continued on page 4.
Sessions of the committee on work of the Masonic Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas begin in Waco on November 26 and run to December 1. The Grand Chapter meets December 3 4 at the Grand Masonic Temple with the Grand Lodge of Texas to convene December 5 for two days. Members of the grand lodge committee on work arrive December 7.
Sherman, Nov. 14. A jury deliberated six minutes to convict Silas Jordan, a Black man, of robbery by firearms against Mrs. A. R. Hassenpflug and sentenced him to electrocution.
D. Rogers of Brazos county and the Alien farm near the southern Brazos area, a top cotton seed breeder, hosted German spinners at his Navasota base. They visited his Rogete seed breeding operation to learn about quality cotton and uniform staple, impressed by the Acala variety.
The tenth annual rodeo and pageant by Saddle and Sirloin Club at A and M College Texas will be in the animal husbandry pavilion on Thursday November 16. Pageant directed by Mrs W C Mitchell of Bryan and rodeo ringmaster R W Howe of Seymour. Proceeds fund the livestock judging team trips to national and international events.
New York reports 70 survivors arrive amid joy and 108 dead from the Vestris sinking. Passengers blame Captain Wm Carey for mismanagement while praising his bravery. unclear cause and no SOS for about a day. Berlin and American Shipper assisted the survivors.
The Navy reported the battleship Wyoming would press on with rescue efforts for Vestris survivors and that no orders were given to return. Admiral Hughes stated it was unlikely anyone in the water remained alive but emphasized exhaustive life saving efforts.
Texas A and M cross country team coached by Frank Anderson faces Rice Owl runners in a dual meet during the Texas Aggie Rice grid tilt at Kyle Field. Last year the Aggies won by one point. both teams boast strong showings this season. The Aggies clocked 20 19 in Austin on a 3 8 mile hill course. this year’s course is level with better times expected. Captain Moore Shoemaker Wind Brown Perkir Mel Badger lead the squad.
Workmen are busy removing debris blocking Bryan Street for weeks. Clearing will restore transport routes and pave the street end to end through the business district, improving travel for residents and merchants.
Charles Winfree, once a successful oil driller with 0.7 test wells and a good salary, abandons drilling to raise pure bred rabbits. He has invested over 3500 in registered rabbits and notes profits from pedigreed stock, meat rabbits, and fur. His rabbitry sits near a large shed among oil wells in Wichita Falls county.
National United Daughters of the Confederacy set its annual convention in Houston starting November 18 with church services and a week of programs. About 2,000 delegates from scattered chapters are expected, featuring memorials for Gen. Felix Robertson and Gen. J. C. Foster among other dignitaries and figures.
A baby named Devi was born to Mr and Mrs Herbert Devi the day after the election confirming Herbert DeVil’s presidential victory. The birth occurred in Houston and was noted as a nod to the president elect.
