Texas House Splits on Gas Tax and Passes Other Measures
The Texas House failed to break a 67 to 67 tie on an 8 1-2 percent gas tax proposal after Speaker Calvert cast the deciding vote. Bills advanced include registering motor vehicles in any county, delaying Arlington and Stephenville college upgrades, and re-enacting highway bond assumptions as sessions extend into the night. The Jones income franchise tax bill moved forward with a 2 percent net profits levy, despite amendments, as leaders weighed final passage amid tense cloture and strategy.
