Reading Club Open Meeting Highlights Citizenship Program

The Reading Club met at the Carnegie Library at 3 30 p m with Mrs G L Crawford leading a Citizenship program. Betty Swallow performed Peer Gynt's dance Anita, McDowell violin solo To a Wild Rose was played by Mrs M E Cox, with Mrs J N Dulaney on piano. An immigration and naturalization scene featured country representatives and baggage props. Brazos County’s Italian population noted, and Irish songs followed with social time and refreshments.

East Texas Chamber of Commerce planned meeting

Houston aims to form an East Texas Chamber of Commerce modeled after the West Texas group. An organizational meeting is set for Longview on March 24. Houston Chamber manager VD H Kaines said a letter seeking cooperation from 25 East Texas bodies has been received by Lt. M. Kelly, the local chairman.

Allen Academy Commended by Col Mayo for ROTC excellence

Col C R Mayo officer of the 8th Corps Area completed a school inspection and praised Allen Academy ROTC. He commended the largest and most efficient cadet corps yet, noting it won all rifle matches and contests against Military Academies and Junior Colleges. Rain Falls Heavily Overnight With 1.51 Inch Total

Rain began about 7:00 last night and lasted until shortly after 7:00 this morning. The Eagle Printing Company gauge showed 1.51 inches, a heavy soaking that worsened rural roads still recovering from last weekend’s 1.90 inches over three days. The moisture will aid ground drying and farming, boosting plans for cotton planting and Bravos county’s diversification program, which could be worth thousands by year end.

Body of Woman Found on Houston Rail Tracks

A scantily dressed young white woman was found on the Southern Pacific Railroad right of way near Houston. Police report she may have been thrown from a train or an automobile.

Santa Fe Offers Free Trip to Brazos County Club Winner

Santa Fe Railway will fund sixty two all expense paid trips to the Fifth National Boys and Girls Club Congress in Chicago next December. Texas receives nineteen awards with other western states also benefiting, as clubs in counties overseen by full time Agricultural Extension Agents compete for the trip.

In Crab Orchard West Virginia a mine explosion left twenty entombed workers. Ten men were rescued, five remained missing with hopes two could still be alive. Three bodies found today, raising the death toll to four. Five workers were believed isolated from the blast.

The Supreme Court in mandamus proceedings held that oil royalties from University of Texas lands must go into the permanent building fund. The writ was pressed and the Legislature’s act to place royalties in the available building fund was deemed unconstitutional.

Revolutionary tendencies among farmers rise in Granbury

Granbury March 10 Radicalism and a tendency toward revolutionary thought among the farmers growing apace under the economical injustice of the present agricultural situation. Colonel Clarence Ousley director of the Safe Farming Association declared in an address here today at the more cotton on fewer acres the cotton problem. He predicted a South wide bankruptcy if even approximately as much cotton is produced this year as last.

Stiney Zulkoski Found Not Guilty in Liquor Case

Stiney Zulkoski, charged with sale of intoxicating liquor involving Allen Academy students and Sexton Orms, pleaded not guilty and was acquitted by the jury. Another defendant, Stach Beizenski, received a two year straight sentence for uttering a forged instrument.

Charlie Forsthoff of Reliance reports heavy plant lice in his garden crops including turnip greens lettuce and cabbage. He follows Extension Service guidance using nicotine sulphate dust when temperatures exceed 70 degrees with a one minute dusting. Blackleaf is recommended though hard to apply to undersides. Mayor Haswell Recovering After Temple Operation

Mayor Tyler Haswell of Bryan is a patient in a Temple hospital after a successful operation Monday morning. His condition is satisfactory and he is recovering quickly. Mrs Haswell and several Bryan friends visited the patient as he remains in hospital for about two weeks.
