Nine-Year Average Flea Hopper Hatch Found
Latest reports from the cotton sector show flea hopper hatching near the nine year average. Dr. F L Thor of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station notes hatching from overwintering eggs was above the nine year average in early May, then declined later in the period. Prior to June 1 an average of about 60 flea hoppers per 1000 croton weeds were collected from six Texas counties. Boll weevil emergence at College Station for May was .38 percent. accumulative weevil emergence prior to June totals 3.1 percent, below the ten year average of 5.51 percent. Conditions favor boll weevils and a portion of upland cotton near woods shows 0 to 58 percent of squares punctured. Accumulative weevil emergence from four cages at Winter Garden near Crystal City prior to June totals 4.8 percent. Cotton leafworms were found in Calhoun and Brooks and in the Hidalgo Valley during the past week.
