Andrew F Reed son of Prof and Mrs D H Reed of College Station left for Los Angeles California to work as telephone operator on the steamship City of Los Angeles running between Los Angeles and Honolulu He will return to College Station to begin his sophomore year at A and M. Christine Henderson of Houston visited on campus and returned home Mrs P M Raysor and her two daughters Mrs Russell of Long Beach and Mrs C L Wignall of Port Arthur left for Port Arthur for a visit and Mrs Raysor planned to continue to California with her daughter after several weeks with the Wignalls
Four Creager delegates at large from Texas, instructed for Herbert Hoover, won seats at the National Republican convention in Kansas City. The victory came despite protests from a rival faction led by Representative Wurzbach of San Antonio.
The triennial convention of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen chose Houston Texas as the next meeting place during sessions in Cleveland today. The decision defines the venue for the forthcoming gathering of railroad workers and union representatives.
A robber held up the Breckenridge Bank near Enid Oklahoma today and stole $1,100. Police were alerted and searching for the suspect.
A group of Bryan DeMolays will depart Thursday for Dallas to attend the annual state meet. Attending are Newell Holland Elton Holland B V Howell Jack Boyett Howard Hedges Henry Hance Leslie Randolph Reed McDonald Charlie Munday Leslie Jones Hendrix Conway Ervin Conway aided by Forest Jones and H E Randolph. They will meet in Dallas by Albert Hanneman who left Tuesday for a visit to Sweetwater. Mrs B F Howell and daughter Morene of College will also join, visiting relatives in Dallas. The party will return Sun.
At the A and M College in College Station Texas the final commencement exercises announced numerous honors and scholarships. J B Freeman of Cleburne won 25 prizes in freshman chemistry. West Texas Utilities Company awarded cash prizes to electrical engineering seniors. H V Lester of Dallas $150 G B Kaiser of Wharton $75 and R F E Gnauck of El Paso $25. Architectural awards went to C C Ordonez of Girardot Colombia a gold medal and T A Krauel of Houston a silver medal with F F Dexter of Houston taking third. The North Texas Chapter A I A junior competition awarded W A Fischer of San Antonio first and E W Middlebrook of Nacogdoches second. F F Dexter received a $750 fellowship at the University of Cincinnati 1928-29. N E Ryalk Jasper received a 20 acre irrigated farm from the American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company of Mercedes for outstanding agricultural study. The year’s distinguished students totaled 114 with Dean Charles E Finley noting the top performers W W Thalmann Bandera senior W P Patton Lockhart junior W E Morgan Fort Worth sophomore and J O Cretsinger Bryan freshman. Agricultural awards included Chilean Nitrate of Soda Educational Bureau $200 scholarships to horticultural students R F Lindsay Pearsall W D Beach Wichita Falls W H Jones Arlington. Pullman Company $250 scholarship for hog judging won by E Howard Devine at the International Livestock Exposition Chicago. Cash awards to A C Buchanan Temple for best stock plans.
Oslo reports that Lieutenant Holm, a Norwegian flyer, searched for the Italia and found nothing. He attempted the mission from the sealing ship Hobby off the northern coast of West Spitzbergen, as the first flyer to pursue the airship from an operated vessel.
The Senate committee released its final pre-convention report showing total presidential campaign expenditures at 721000 dollars. More than half was attributed to Secretary Hoover.
Dr. A B Cox professor of business administration and director of the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Texas has been invited to deliver lectures at the University of Munster in Germany this summer. He will sail to study cotton marketing for a private firm and may visit Bremen Liverpool Havre Milan Manchester Barcelona and Ghent.
Cotton futures quoted from 20 to 85 points down with local spot prices at 19 to 19 12 cents per pound as trading mixed. The report notes market pressure and regional cash price activity for the day.
Six or seven armed men held up the Detroit News offices and escaped with most of the payroll, about five thousand dollars, after wounding two officers, one possibly fatally. Some money was dropped during the escape.
The June meeting of the Woman's Missionary Society of the First Christian church elected officers for the new year: Mrs. J. H. Allen president, Mrs. Will S. Collard vice president, and Mrs. A. F. Ainsworth secretary treasurer. The event, hosted by Mrs. Ainsworth at the Edge apartments, featured a program on Training World Citizens and Making of Homes, with papers on India, Africa, Jamaica, the Philippines, and missionary influence. A reception with strawberry ice cream followed, with several members and a visitor from Topeka, Kansas in attendance.
Ralph Howell Jr youngest son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Howell of this city received his A B degree from the State University at Austin with the graduating class of 1928 Tuesday. He is receiving congratulations from many friends in this city and across Texas for his fine scholastic record at Austin.
Paris June 7 Winfield F. Scott post American Legion reports surpassing its quota by rapidly completing a one week drive. New membership stands at 201 against a 200 target. The post split into two teams with a winner to be entertained by the loser in the drive.
Federal trade commission to resume inquiry into power trust activities in the gulf coast states on June 12 coinciding with the Republican national convention. No hearings this week due to the Electric Light association meeting in Atlantic City. Witnesses listed include C. W. Davis W. C. Grant S J Ballinger and Hugh M Blain.

Dr S W Bilsing of A and M College entomology department will start a lecture series at Tabor next Friday night on insect control. Initial talks cover general insect topics followed by specific problems like cutworms plant lice army worms and cotton flea. Ta bor residents and nearby communities are urged to attend all lectures by a leading state expert.
L. F. Vance of Baltimore was arrested and held for several hours on charges of annoying Chief Justice Taft. He was taken into custody in the capitol near the supreme court and released after promising to stay away. Vance had been ejected from the supreme court two weeks earlier for trying to address the court after it had declined to revisit cases in which he was a litigant.
J M Barron, brother of the late J W Barron and father of Hon W S Barron, is appointed district clerk of Brazos county by Judge W C Davis to serve out the late Mr Barron’s term. He will not seek re election after winding up his brother’s affairs. Barron, 69, previously served as Grimes County commissioner and filled the late J W Hamilton’s term as justice of the peace.
A Brazos County farmer F Martin of Edge talks with Bryan merchants about diversification after a good rain. He farms 40 acres cotton 25 corn 2 sorghum and maintains a garden chickens dairy cows and hogs. He advocates diversification to boost local prosperity.
Moscow reports fluctuating hope over the dirigible Italia after Siberia radio signals proved unreliable. Murmansk Station had interpreted messages as rescue plans but the alarm was later questioned, leaving uncertainty about Italia's fate.
The Department of Agriculture reports boll weevil activity through May 16 has been well below the levels seen in the three prior years. The finding comes from a tabulated summary across sixteen federal state and college stations in the cotton belt.
A 99 year sentence for Lloyd Conatser of Jones county in the slaying of Fisher county sheriff and deputy was affirmed by the court of criminal appeals. Bill Smith, convicted with Conatser, awaits execution at Huntsville.

Dispute within Texas Republicans over the delegation to the national convention was presented to the Republican National Committee in Kansas City. A decision by the committee was expected that afternoon.
South Carolina delegates pledged to Lowden were seated at the Republican national committee session after the withdrawal of the contest. The credentials were recognized and the delegation was headed by Joseph Tolberg, national committeeman from South Carolina.

Dr. R. J. Hunnicutt charged with criminal assault will not be tried this Thursday. Judge W. C. Davis announced a continuance agreed by both sides due to defense witnesses being ill. The case is postponed to the next term in Bryan with jurors released.
Brazos County rivals Galveston and Alvin in Cape Jessamine cultivation as Mrs. D. E. Thompson of Steep Hollow supplies the office with a 6 ft tall bush covered in thousands of glossy white blossoms. Her granddaughter Mrs. J. L. Stull delivered the fragrant display.

A Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce meeting adopted a motion for the city development committee to explore securing a landing field near Bryan. The drive for East Texas Chamber of Commerce membership reports one block canvassed with all but one firm taking a membership.
In Trepassey Newfoundland on June 7 the monoplane Friendship was delayed by strong winds as Amelia Earhart Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon prepared for an Atlantic crossing. They slept well and planned to start as soon as weather allowed.
An extraordinary Texas Baptist General Convention session in First Baptist Church, Waco, endorses a seven year financial program to keep Baylor University in Waco. Donations pledged reach 416 303 50 toward a 1 000 000 Waco goal, with 1 000 000 from Baptists outside Waco to match. Dr George W Truett delivered the feature address.
Fort Worth hosts one of the Southwest largest airplane shows June 18 19 and 20 during the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention. More than 100 planes from American makers and foreign designs compete across programs. Featured aircraft include a 1910 Texas pioneer plane owned by a Decatur man a glider by a Breckenridge aviator with a 37 minute flight record and a Texas Aerial Corporation Temple craft with a low landing speed and fast takeoff claim.
A Crenshaw county tornado last night left more than 100 people homeless in Laverne Alabama. Damage is estimated at 100000 dollars.
Only children between six and seven are eligible for a free clinic run by the Bryan Parent Teachers Association. It will be held at the Health Nurse office in the courthouse on Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. A Rally Day for younger children will be held later this month. Miss Ella Bandelin and local physicians volunteer with the PTA to support this health effort, urging community cooperation.
Abilene High School awarded diplomas to 177 graduates under Superintendent R. D. Green continuing its record as the largest West Texas class. Amarillo next with 136, Brownwood 128, Breckenridge 77, San Angelo 73, Lamesa 70, and Sweetwater 60. Including 35 mid term graduates, total for 1927-28 was 212.
Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Fuller and son Nelson travel from Bryan by car for Chicago Illinois to visit daughter Mrs. L. L. Ruggles and family in Wheaton. They will be joined by son Allan C. Fuller from Buffalo where he works at the city library. Return to Bryan College in about a month.
In George town on June 5 Dr. J Sam Barcus longtime Southwestern University president since 1924 submitted his resignation to the board of trustees to take effect at the end of the summer session Earlier that day he conferred diplomas on the largest graduating class in the school's history Barcus had previously served as president at Clarendon and Seth Ward institutions without giving a reason for his departure
