Bodies from Oklahoma and Texas are moved to a central cemetery near Saint Etienne a Ames, France until homeward repatriation is decided. A complete Graves Registration index was sent to Texas and Oklahoma governors and the War Camp Community Service.

New Regulations by Commission to Save Oil and Gas Wastes

Austin July 81 Under new gas and oil conservation rules the railroad commission requires all abandoned holes be plugged or closed as approved and prohibits drilling or plugging without notice to the commission. Oil and gas in the same hole must have a separating device at the mouth to prevent gas waste. Pro ducers must regularly report production receipts stock sales promotion expenses real estate or lease transfers gas well pressure fires pipeline breaks and oil losses. Company books open to stockholders and the commission. Rules cover handling of gas strata to prevent waste.

Teachers Wage Unaffected by Free Text Books Plan

Miss Annie Webb Blanton asserts in Austin on July 31 that buying free text books will not cut teacher salaries. She notes a 15 cent per $100 special tax funds text books and will help supplement the state school fund rather than using the fund to pay teachers.

Committee Probes Form of Soldiers Memorial

The commercial club memorial committee met with seven of nine members present to discuss the form of memorial for World War soldiers. Much discussion occurred but no conclusions were reached. A second meeting is set for August 6, and public opinion will be sounded on the memorial form.

Team Mules Break Loose After Collision With Car

A team of mules owned by Jim mie Degelia of Steele's store bolted from in front of Yoodwin's grist mill and ran down Main avenue. They collided with a new Chevrolet, damaging it about twenty dollars. The mules were unhurt and appeared to try entering the car before stopping.

London July 31 London Daily News prints apology to cabinet members Austen Chamberlain Walter Hume Long Sir Eric Geddes and Sir Auckland Geddes for base less charges that they held Russian mining and development shares. Ministers file libel action against the paper.

Oldest Mustache Claims in Missouri Shelby State

In St Louis on July 31 two men challenged paying heed to Joseph Ward of Atlanta Missouri whose mustache is fifty six years old. J B Paulding aged seventy eight from 1473 St Louis avenue says he never shaved his upper lip. J R Heryford of Shamrock notes he shaved June 12 1861 when enlisting in the Confederate army and has not shaved since. He claims a facial hair age over fifty eight years making it likely the oldest in the state.

Postmasters to Distribute Army Surplus to Cut Costs

Washington July 31 President Wilson weighs the high cost of living as all government branches address the issue. Postmasters and carriers will distribute 125 million dollars worth of surplus army foodstuffs to the public with price lists sent nationwide. Mail carriers will take orders and collect payment at the point of sale.

Road commissioners to be chosen for bond issue work

Voters in Brazos County precincts 1 through 4 are reminded that two road commissioners from each precinct will be named at the August 19 election to direct highway construction and the proposed $1,500,000 bond issue. The Brazos county highway committee will call precinct conventions soon for taxpayers to nominate candidates, with equal authority to the regular county commissioners in bond and road matters.

Dallas July 81 The swimming pool in the basement of the City Temple an institutional church building has recruited more than a dozen new members for the Central Presbyterian church. Dr J Frank Smith pastor says his Sunday school includes boys and girls who once would have had no religious training were it not for the pool in his church.

Bryan Street Block To Be Improved By Building

John Sebesta bought a 27 by 150 foot Bryan street lot between the Bonneville and Astin properties for 2500 dollars and will erect a modern brick store building. The Noto building owned by E H Astin will be modernized, and E F Parks and Co will remodel their block building as well as a new structure now under construction. Work will start as soon as the contractor is ready.

Pacific Fleet Sets Record Sailing Time to San Francisco

San Francisco July 31 The new Pacific fleet is expected to reach San Francisco in about 18 to 19 days of sailing from Hampton Roads less than the Atlantic fleet took 61 days 19 hours for its 1908 cruise. The Pacific fleet through the Panama Canal will be larger and costlier with around 196 vessels and 23 000 men. President Wilson planned to review over 150 ships in August.

Women Yeomen to be Mustered Out at Washington

Washington July 1 More than two thousand female yeomen and feminine corps reservists on duty here are to be mustered out of the navy today. Many will be employed in civil capacities in the navy department. The remainder will be released about August 11 in other locations and island possessions.

Major General Weygand with Foch declares it is up to England to decide what to do with the former kaiser. He says the Kaiser is covered with shame and ignominy and branded a coward, and that the punishment is enough for the French.

Threaten Strike If Wages Rise Or Living Costs Don’t Sink

William Lee, president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, warned that unless the railroad administration acts by October 1 to raise wages or cut living costs, protective action will be taken. A sixteen member committee in Washington adopted the resolution, and President Wilson supported the demand in a separate briefing. Six railroad shop unions, representing about 450000 workers, urged workers nationwide not to strike before a final settlement, while noting the administration agreed to discuss rules and working conditions.
