Guardsmen plan inter-company sports across lower Rio Grande

In Harlingen Texas on July 21 soldiers in the federalized and regular border forces plan a series of athletic events including inter company and regiment field meets and baseball games at stations along the lower Rio Grande Valley. Polo is expected to grow with cavalry units as Fort Brown prepares a field and polo club under Brig Gen James Parker as president.

Dallas city commissioners refused to invite Billy Sunday to hold a revival here. Mayor Lindsley and two commissioners planned to vote against extending an invitation after a letter from W C Everett requested the city support. Everett argued the event would bring vast crowds and nationwide publicity, but the officials cited commercialism and separation from Nazarene principles.

Vaccination Moves at Buckner's Orphan Home

In Dallas area Buckner's Orphan Home faces a typhoid threat with 26 cases. Six percent of the resident children are being vaccinated with anti typhoid serum as officials work to curb the outbreak and inform relatives of any developments.

Bryan City Council Adjourns After Key Decisions

At the adjourned Bryan city council session the sewage disposal plant was discussed as inadequate and plans to enlarge before the year end were outlined. Fire department travel to nearby towns was approved without mayoral consent. Street name changes were approved Dallas to College, Austin to Ursuline Avenue, Red Top to Parker. Red Top paving on West Anderson to West Burleson was ordered with property owners paying all costs. Salaries for four city workers were raised effective July 1996. The meeting adjourned after routine business.

Big Fish From Brazos Attracts Town Visitors

Mr. Ben Bulmankie brought to town two large channel catfish from Goodson's Bend on the Big Brazos. The yellow specimen weighed 26.4 pounds and the other 16 pounds. He caught them Thursday night on a trot line.

Family group returns from Sylvan Beach outing

Mr. and Mrs. N. N. Broadway along with their daughter Mrs. A. E. Graham and her two daughters Miss Dorothy and Miss Marie of Mart and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Harrison of Hico plus another daughter and her husband returned yesterday from an auto overland trip to Sylvan Beach where they spent 10 days enjoying the surf bathing. The party reports a most delightful time and say Sylvan Beach is the place to go to enjoy an outing.

Death toll climbs in infantile paralysis surge

The Associated Press reports 31 deaths and 119 new cases in the last 24 hours, the highest daily toll since the outbreak began on June 26. The figures show a continuing increase in infantile paralysis fatalities and infections.

Asphalt plant arrives for city paving project in Bryan

The Kaw Paving Company brings a 200000 pound asphalt plant from Pine Bluff Arkansas to Bryan. The 65 foot long unit will be placed on a spur track along the L&N right of way just south of the freight depot near the H. & T. C. line.
