The People’s Column urges Bryan residents to extend all courtesies to thousands of state agriculturists visiting next week for the Farmers’ Short Course. It emphasizes making a favorable impression of Bryan and Brazos County and invites cheerful, generous hospitality.
King Ferdinand of Romania died at 2 15 am at Chateau De Pelisher Sinaia after a long fight with cancer. The monarch, long in frail health, passed peacefully with royal family at his bedside, ending a much mourned reign.
Bryan L. G. Jones, soils professor, has just returned from five weeks in Ithaca New York. He earned his PhD in soils at Cornell University. Mrs. Jones remains in Boulder Colorado.
TEXAS A AND M College hosts a Farmers Short Course July 25 30 with a special July 26 meeting for fruit growers and truck crop producers. Topics include fruit variety selection fertilizing spraying packing shipping disease control citrus production and pecan industry growth with experts from the Experiment Station Extension Service and field agents speaking. J F Rosborough chairs the horticulture program and directs daily sessions.
Belgrade July 20 Associated Press reports Romania has wired Prince Carol with news of his father’s death and reiterates its commitment to the January 19 1926 decision. The decision accepted his renunciation of the throne and established a regency for Prince Michael.
Del Rio July 20 Mrs F A Harris 107 years old died here today. The greater part of her life was spent in Texas.
A cementing job at Cole Hardware Co. uncovered six to six spools of white mercerized size No 10 thread hidden behind the vault walls since 1898. Made by Hadley & Co Holyoke, the thread remains in good color and strength. The store once belonged to Cole Bros Noah Mason and Jap Cole, who ran a dry goods shop until 1898.
A water conservation and utilization conference, July 29 during the Farmers' Short Course at A. and M. College, will gather state leaders in reclamation, irrigation, and flood control. A. D. Jackson of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station leads the program with speakers from the Texas Conservation Association, Brazos River Reclamation Association, Trinity River Reclamation Association, the State Board of Water Engineers, and federal agencies.
A 1597 manuscript copy of the Michoacan charter by Charles V is held in the Garcia collection at the University of Texas library. The red scroll replica features blue artwork of Patzcuari lake and Tzintzuntzan peninsula with a decorative city coat of arms.
New York July 20 Jack Sharkey wrapped up training for his bout with Jack Dempsey on Thursday night after a final three round session. He weighs 192 pounds and Sparring produced powerful rights and lefts drawing caution from his corner. Betting favored Sharkey with odds from six to five to 13 to 10, while Dempsey backers favored a knockout at about 1 to 3.
Austin July 20. Contracts for hundreds of highway maintenance machines totaling 1 325 070 dollars were let today by the board of control to about 25 or 30 firms, after the board upheld its recommendations over the highway department.

The Texas Supreme Court restrained trial of H. H. and C. D. Lenox v Texas Farm Bureau in Red River County to rule on Judge R. J. Williams disqualification. Williams recused himself due to third degree kinship to Farm Bureau officials. Judge P. G. Blackburn appointed. The court notes kinship issues and corporation aspects, with final action due after October term. Aaron Sapiro, Chicago, was counsel for the bureau in the libel suit against Henry Ford.
Rio Grande City reports a week of sports at Fort Ringgold from August to 14 with the 12th Cavalry second squadron and Fort McIntosh 4th Field Artillery fielding polo baseball and boxing teams from Laredo. An August 18 horse show will feature officers and enlisted men. Two Kelly Field airplanes are sought for a series of air stunts as crowds gather for a Valley event.
The July 1 census estimates show Texas has gained 84 000 in population over the past year. Texas now lists a population of 5 397 000, up from 5 313 000 a year earlier and from 4 668 228 in 1920.
Two unidentified tramps were killed and two more seriously injured when a Katy freight train wrecked near Eufaula today in Muskogee Oklahoma.

A fire at the Svea hotel in Chicago on July 20 killed three people Gus Anderson 52 William Pearce and an unidentified man. Four others were seriously injured one not expected to live.
Corsicana judge Fred Upchurch spoke to the Bryan Lions Club, sent by Congressman Luther A. Johnson who missed the gathering due to a relative's illness. The program included songs for next week's A and M Farmers Short Course, a rousing Griner reception, and plans for a high school athletic partnership. Attendees included J. Hensarling, J. Henson, F. D. Fuller, and Ty Cobb among others.
Officials say R S Sterling of Houston likely will seek the Texas governorship in 1928 if Governor Moody runs for the U S Senate. Sterling has not commented publicly since leading the State Highway Commission and remains focused on highway work during Austin visits.
Rev. Jess Thompson of a college preached at the First Methodist Church in Navasota on Sunday. This was his second appointment here during Rev. John W. Goodwin's vacation in Arkansas. Thompson is expected to return next Sunday for the morning service.
Calshot England July 20 Captain Courtney announced he intends to take off tomorrow morning for Valentia Ireland base of his proposed trans Atlantic flight to New York. Scheduled departure today was postponed on account of trouble with wireless.
In Boston on July 20 Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti pressed their hunger strike for a fourth day. They refused the warden's offer to change meat menus at the state prison.
The East Texas Chamber of Commerce regional meeting begins at Woodlake Groveton with all day program. Speakers include Hayne Nelms Groveton on welcome and U S Senator Earle B Mayfield on The Romance and Glory of the South. R M Kelly East Texas Chamber presides.
Mrs Alvert Buchanan of Bryan has been invited as a Texas commission member to a Thomas Jefferson Centennial Commission meeting at Monticello Charlottesville Virginia on Saturday August 13 1927 A reception will honor commission officers including Calvin Coolidge honorary chairman Dr Edward A Alderman honorary vice chairman and Royal S Copeland chairman of the executive committee
Mrs. M. W. Sims Jr. returned Tuesday from an eight week visit with daughter Mrs. Robert Stiles in New York. She also visited Washington City and Connecticut with friends, and spoke of Mr. Stiles now with Kelleg Refinery and Construction in New York. The couple will travel for chemical engineering work starting in London and then Poland, with Mrs. Stiles joining him. Mrs. Sims is known locally as Miss Kathleen Sims.
Col. Charles Lindbergh starts a three month air tour from Mitchell Field, visiting 75 cities in 48 states. He departs this afternoon in his monoplane and plans a Hartford stop, with the voyage under the Guggenheim Foundation to promote commercial aviation.
Lauretta Jancik marked her seventeenth birthday with an August party at her parents home. About sixteen friends attended on the lawn for games of chance with prizes including a hand crafted handkerchief a powder puff and shoe trees. Ice cream and angel food cake followed.
The College Avenue Baptist Sunday School picnic is set for Thursday evening at Blue Hole on the Little Brazos river. Members should gather at the church by four o'clock. transportation will be provided for those without a ride, and drivers with spare seats are asked to report at the church.
Stamford July 20 plans were announced to enter an airplane in the Easterwood Dallas to Hongkong flight. The aircraft would be named the West Texan and an aviator is yet to be selected.
The state automatic tax board postponed its meeting to Wednesday at 4 p m to set the year’s tax rate. Governor Dan Moody chairs the board with State Treasurer W G Hatcher and Comptroller S H Terrell as members. Moody was late returning from Kerrville.
Paris July 20 Former Crown Prince stays at his home near Paris and declines to speak with reporters as no statement has been issued about his father’s death in Romania.
