Cotton Insect Situation in Texas
Moths of the cotton bollworms have begun moving from corn to cotton in South-central Texas. Growers with large, rapidly growing plants may see injury within two to three weeks, heavier on bottom lands due to showers. Accurate timing and use of calcium arsenate, at least 8 pounds per acre, are key controls. Leafworms appear in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and reach Brazos and Burleson counties, likely expanding across South and Central Texas. Flea hoppers cause little harm in Central Texas and have declined 50 percent in Calhoun county, while Taft shows a spike in San Patricio. In Dickens county, large adult populations near Spur, with expected damage higher than usual, suggest migratory movements from weeds to cotton.
