Seed quality key to shorter cotton staple in Texas

Texas agricultural tests show shorter staple lengths stem from planting shorter staple varieties, not soil fertility. Fertilizer on East Texas sands had little effect, while phosphoric acid on Angleton’s dark prairie soils increased staple length by about 1/16 inch. Despite varying soil fertility, suited varieties can yield tender cotton. mills prefer at least 7/8 inch staples, yet Texas farmers still produce a surplus of 3 4 inch cotton, totaling 710 500 bales in 1929.
