Ousley to urge Texas farmers to boost 1918 crops

Assistant Secretary of Agriculture Clarence Ousley, also director of the A and M extension service, travels to Texas next week to urge larger food and feed crop plantings. He speaks in Bonham, Waxahachie, Temple, and Waco from Feb 25 to 28, then advocates with extension staff at College Station.

Fertilizer 76 Cents a Ton Used on Campus Grounds

Athletic Director Driver begins spreading manure on the A and M college grounds near the gymnasium. Free manure from Camp Logan, Houston, costs 76 cents a ton freight plus handling and spreading charges. Delay Draft Date That Farm Labor May Be Undisturbed

Secretary Baker said no date was chosen for the start of the second draft with estimates ranging from March 1 to June 1. The government aims to avoid disturbing farm labor during planting season while plans call for one hundred thousand men a month until the second quota is met to reduce first call confusion.

Reciprocal Draft Treaties Sent to Senate

Washington February 20 treaties between the United States and Great Britain and between the United States and Canada to govern draft application for citizens living in the other nation were sent to the Senate by Secretary Lansing. Signed by Lansing and Earl Reading in his first act as British high commissioner and special ambassador.

Farmers Held for Espionage in Washington County

George Mauhlmas and William Richt, farmers aged 57 and 46, were arrested in Washington county by federal authorities for alleged espionage act violations. They were brought to Austin by Deputy U.S. Marshal J. Dol Platt and will face a U.S. commissioner hearing Saturday. Both men were born and raised in Washington county and have families nearby.

Bid for State Road Rejected as Too Low

Governor Hobby rejected a single $180,000 bid from Midwest Iron Co. for the 23 miles of state railroad from Palestine to Rusk and its accessories. The prison commission had advised the bid was too low and held up the sale, seeking further instructions.

Reagan county sheriff kills rancher then commits suicide

Henry Japson Reagan county sheriff shot and killed James Belchey at Big Lake railroad station and then killed himself. Both men were wealthy West Texas ranchers facing financial difficulties. Belcher was boarding the train when the shooting occurred.
