Bryan residents traveled to Calvert Tuesday afternoon for the funeral of Judge G W Taliaferro former Bryan citizen who died at his Calvert home on Monday Feb 6. Attendees included E H Austin Capt W E Saunders Judge W C Davis and W B Saunders.
Ed Jackson of Indiana, his arraignment over bribery of Governor McCray in 1923, pleads not guilty. Georeg Coffin Marion county Republican chairman and Robert Marsh local attorney also plead not guilty and seek separate trials. They are accused of offering $10 and immunity for replacing James McDonald as Marion county prosecutor.
C R Baxendale 62 of Strawn was killed and Marshall Cook of Strawn sustained a fractured skull when their car was struck by a truck near Arlington and overturned early today.
Mrs. Weldon Jones and Mrs. Charles DeViney hosted the Martha Class of the First Christian church for a Valentine party Monday evening. Red heart decorations and a miniature post office set the stage for partner matching contests and games, followed by refreshments. Guests included Miss Sara Bell Wilson, Gladys Dowling, Elizabeth Holt, Genie De Steigner, Mrs. A. F. Ainesworth, G. L. Crawford, Jess M. Cook, L. J. Falgeau, E. B. Middleton, James Ray, Grace Dowling, J. Love, W. S. Collard, and O. B. Warbington.
The Texas highway department will outline its road maintenance plan for the remainder of the fiscal year at the Feb 20 commission meeting in Austin. Maintenance engineer Leo Ehlinger said a large portion of the original 8.5 million dollar maintenance budget remains unspent.
Robert Stewart chairman of Standard Oil Indiana appeared before the Teapot Dome committee by Rockefeller Jr guidance. Rockefeller Jr regretted Stewart did not answer all questions in a letter to the committee as correspondence was released by the panel.
Beatrice Fuller a white woman and Clarence Kellem a Mulatto wed in Rockville Connecticut at 1 AM after threats and protests blocked their previous attempt. Justice of the peace Carl A. Goehring of Ellington officiated following a failed effort to marry the couple by Rev. George S. Brooke of the Union Congregational Church.
In Port-au-Prince Haiti Colonel Charles Lindbergh departed at 6 35 this morning for a 750 mile flight to Havana the final stop on his goodwill itinerary. Also noted is the Holland Tunnel named for engineer Clifford M Holland who died just before boring completion.
A capacity crowd at the Palace Theatre in Bryan applauded the Lions Club second annual minstrel directed by Henry S. Locke. The Allen Academy Band opened the evening, with end men, Rip Erskine, Harry Estill, Bill Wimberly, Marshall Bullock and Emory Smith delivering comic routines. Special costumes by Mrs. Henry Locke added color, and a final three act comedy Gimme Dem Peanuts closed the program.
Tuesday Lions Club program featured Carl Sprague of A and M College with banjo and cowboy songs. Ware, introducing himself as an abstractor, spoke on land history and the abstracting profession. Guests included C C Redding, B C Morgan, O J Parks. many members praised planning of a minstrel show and a $1 bargain day to benefit Bryan.
Magnolia Petroleum Company reduced crude oil prices in Arkansas Smackover district. High grade crude fell 10 cents and lower grade dropped 15 cents, announced in Dallas on February 8.
Violent snow storms in northern Japan have caused deaths and shipping damage. Bodies of three fishermen washed ashore and many others are feared drowned. Cities like Tokyo report disruptions to communications and transport.
The Senate Teapot Dome committee adjourned its hearings in Washington after facing obstacles in uncovering the profits of the Continental Trading Company of Canada. The chairman said hearings may resume next week when called.
Paris February 8 Mrs Elizabeth Day granted a divorce from Henry Mahon Day vice president of the Sinclair Exporting Company on grounds of abandonment.
George Birge age 36 prominent Sherman businessman was killed when his automobile overturned about one mile north of McKinney on the Sherman road.
A campus audience will see Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man Thursday night in Ashley Hall. The reviewer notes Shaw's satirical take on Bulgarians soldiers and aristocrats, praising his blend of humor and ethical insight. The play promises a mix of laughter and thoughtful moments.
Cordes Tieman of Brenham, son of M. A. Tierman, has been named as an alternate to West Point by Congressman J. P. Buchanan. Tieman is a student at A and M College and his friends hope he will receive the appointment.
Five men armed with a machine gun robbed the Twelfth Street Bank in downtown Kansas City, securing about $1,000. No injuries reported as police investigate the midday heist.
Mr and Mrs Ollie J Parks and their young daughter, formerly of Abilene, are visiting relatives in Bryan. Parks has been transferred from the West Texas territory and given more than twenty counties with Houston as headquarters. The family will extend the visit until suitable Houston apartments are found.
In Los Angeles on February 8 the insanity trial of William Hickman concluded testimony at midnight and the defense announced no rebuttal. The case will resume this afternoon with closing arguments.
The Prairie View College male quartet performed Negro spirituals at Long’s cafe for Bryan Rotary. W. H. Darrow praised Prairie View as a branch of Texas A and M educating hundreds of colored youths. The group featured local baritone William Pigford and broadcast over WTAW later that evening.
Mr and Mrs Dan Scoates hosted a Sunday afternoon gathering for College Park residents and members of the Agricultural Engineering Department and families. A luncheon featured turkey and dressing with floral centerpieces and hours of cheerful conversation among neighbors and friends. Guests included H P Smith and son Hask P Jr Fred Jones J E Wagone Montford and others.

Members of the A and M College crops judging team that won fourth at Chicago’s International Livestock Exposition and Grain and Hay Show were awarded medals by President T O Walton for the agronomy department. Team members include Jose de la Fuente Raleigh C Mauldin W L Crawford and R M Zellner. Fuente plans to return to Mexico to run a 9 000 acre ranch after graduation.
The famed preacher Gypsy Smith conducts a Mexia revival with large crowds attending both day and night services. A 300-voice choir from local churches enhances the worship, and the day service runs 1 to 2 PM while the evening service starts at 7 30 PM.
Game warden J. D. Conlee reports widespread infractions of hunting laws in Brazos County and vows strict enforcement. He notes edible birds are mostly off limits with only a few species such as sparrows crows ravens blackbirds pelicans roadrunners hawks jays and owls allowed to be hunted.
Rev and Mrs R L Brown of College Station returned from a Baylor College Benton meeting with the Baptist student workers in Texas They discussed plans for a Southwestern Baptist student Retreat to be held at Fort Worth the first of June The Texas summer meeting has run seven years and attracted participation from Oklahoma New Mexico Louisiana and Arkansas Scholarly work and state planning were discussed with a positive outlook on the future of the state program.
The Southwide conference on reducing cotton acreage and debunking false growth rumors began forming in Texas. Governor Dan Moody outlined a Texas delegation including Dr. T. O. Walton, editors, Dr. P. W. Horn, agricultural leaders, Texas University and A and M representatives, George B. Terrell, Clarence Ousley, farmers, bankers, and cotton factors. At least eight governors are expected to attend.
Miss Sybil Smith administrative assistant in the USDA Experiment Station travels to College Station for consultations with Dr. Jessie Whitacre on Rural Home Research. The visit includes coordinating with Home Economies researchers, editor duties, and honoring Smith at a dinner hosted by Acting Director A. B. Conner and Mrs. Conner for colleagues in Whitacre’s field.
The Messenger asks Texas editors for the names of papers with more than fifty years of continuous publication. It cites The Texas Christian Advocate TS years old, Advance Guard at Goliad 74, Jefferson Simplecute seventy-odd, and Galveston News in the seventies, inviting all qualifying titles for the honor roll.
