Death of Homer T. Mims at Camp Travis 1917

Homer T. Mims of Steep Hollow died at Camp Travis on December 18 1917 after a short illness. He served with the second contingent from Brazos County and was praised as a good soldier and respected by officers and men. He is survived by his father two brothers Pinkey and Luther and sister Miss Laura Mims. Christmas Killing at Clay Plantation

A man was killed at the Clay place in Brazos bottom near Wellborn yesterday. Richard Loftin surrendered to Sheriff Nunn after a call from Millican. Loftin to be examined later this week. Cause unknown. Loftin had been employed as a manager on the plantation for the coming year.

Millican Soldier Boy Loses Hand in Accident

Louis Marquet a Millican youth home from Camp Travis for Christmas holidays suffered a severe accident Tuesday night when a shotgun fired as he fell tearing his hand. He was taken by train to Bry an hospital where surgeons amputated the hand in the afternoon. The hospital report cited his condition as improving this morning.

Senator Newlands Dies of Heart Disease in Washington

Senator Francis Griffith Newlands of Nevada died at his Washington home from heart disease after a few hours illness He collapsed at his senate office but could not be sent home and his death was not known at the capitol until the announcement.

Fire Causes $10 Damage To Cottage On Twenty sixth Street

A fire this afternoon caused ten dollars in damage to a cottage opposite St. Joseph's rectory on Twenty sixth street. Sparks set the roof alight but the flames were quickly extinguished by the fire department. The house is owned by Henry Moehlman and occupied by F. J. Rocher.
