A rock placed by children on Northern Texas Traction rails near Dallas caused an interurban train to derail, overturning two cars and injuring 21 people, none seriously. Rails and cross ties were demolished and service was disrupted from Dallas to Fort Worth, with restoration expected today.
The Bryan city commission supports an airport idea but cites legal limits and budget constraints. They say purchasing land outside city limits requires charter amendments and that paving sewer and water extensions demand priority, leaving airport plans on hold. Mayor E. J. Jenkins states support exists but action is blocked by finance and legal hurdles.
Mr and Mrs Sim Cooper spend the winter in Baird with their son and keep in touch with Bryan through the Eagle. Chas Sosolik sent a fine rooster from Brazos county to Palestine for the East Texas Poultry Show but his name was omitted from yesterday's list. Mr Sosolik is a noted chicken fancier with quality birds. Mr and Mrs Henry Johnson who have lived in Bryan for months have left for Waco to reside permanently with Mrs W S Johnson.
Plans are set for the Bryan and Brazos County Good Cheer Association drive Thursday morning. Committees of men will canvass the business district and committees of women will cover the residential sections. Judge H. Ferguson chairs the finance committee and Mrs. J. L. Brock leads the women’s team. Officials expect at least $2,000 to be raised for the year due to heavier demand for aid tied to crop conditions.
Sheriff J H Reed found a woman prisoner dead in her Brazos county jail cell between 5 and 7 am. The unidentified 40 year old woman had been sent from Navasota by G P Davis and was found with hands tied. Officials suspect heart disease as the cause.
The I. and G. N. approves Howell and Company’s permit to erect an oil and gas warehouse on College Avenue between Sims and Chambers Motor Company tanks. The tanks will be used by Howell and Co.
The Texas railroad commission sent letters to six railroads stating they violated the full crew law as interpreted by the attorney general. The notice names Missouri Pacific Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Southern Pacific Rock Island Panhandle and Santa Fe and St Louis Southwestern and requires motor passenger cars to carry a minimum crew of four.
Partly cloudy to unsettled conditions with possible rain in New Orleans and Bryan areas. East Texas sees similar moisture with chances of rain in southern portions. West Texas remains fair tonight and Thursday.
Bryan will host a Thursday tests of new fire fighting gear with a 2 PM drill at 25th and Main. City officials from Denton Tyler Port Arthur Beaumont Houston Dallas and Marlin will attend along with A B Buseby from American LaFrance Company.
Rev. E. C. Morris and wife arrived from Durham to assume duties as pastor of the Free Baptist church in Bryan. They stay with Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Cloud while moving into the parsonage and plan to greet members Sunday December 15 with his first sermon.
Austin December 11. As the governor race draws attention, several state officials draw interest. Lieutenant governor candidates include J D Parnell and W H Bledsoe. Possible contenders in the legislature include Ray Holder, W S Barron, Edgar Witt, and Tom Pollard. Witt, active in the prison centralization commission, has been urged to run. Barron and Holder weigh options while Pollard keeps plans private. Attorney general race already features three contenders besides Robert Lee Bobbitt.
Bryan voters hear that the city will not require the $1 poll tax any longer, ending city level payments for males age 31 to 45. The county and state poll tax collection remains, but city receipts and qualification for city elections no longer depend on the fee.
London dispatch reports fresh gales and rising floodwaters across England as a ten day stormstorm intensifies. The widespread tempest has claimed 184 lives, underscoring the peril from the prolonged weather siege.
State Seed and Plant Board in Austin heard applicants for 19280 licenses as certified seed growers. Most applicants were cotton growers. Chairman Dr. E P Humbert said the board would meet in Dallas next month and at College Station in February to consider additional applications.
The prison relocation commission will recommend three sites to the legislature for a new central penitentiary near Austin with two minority options for rehabilitating Huntsville walls and for Imperial Farm south of Houston. A Friday Austin meeting aims to finalize the majority and minority recommendations for Governor Moody before a possible January 6 special session. E H Astin, Bryan, of the prison board, is expected to attend.
In Leeds Missouri a young unmasked man armed with a sawed off shotgun robbed the Leeds Bank of five thousand dollars. He locked five people in a vault and escaped, according to Kansas City reports dated December 11.
Kerrville remains the top primary wool and mohair market in the United States with over 6.1 million pounds shipped in the past year. Mohair shipments totaled 2,753,701 pounds all sent from Kerrville to eastern mills, the largest single accumulation in the country.
Officials of the First State Bank and Trust Company will take possession of its new building Thursday afternoon after banking hours and will hold an open house from 7 30 to 9 30 Thursday evening. The invitation was extended to the public through the Eagle with no individual invites mailed.
The cotton market edged down with futures 8 to 10 points lower. New crop quotes ranged from 16 1-2 to 16 3-4 cents.
Joe Burkett, former state senator now of San Antonio, announces his candidacy alleging the attorney general's department has not received proper attention and has been indifferently served.
Catholic Women in Bryan elected district officers for the local branch of the National Catholic Women’s Council at St. Joseph school. Delegates from Hearne Calvert Burlington Caldwell and Anderson attended under Miss Marian Gerling of Houston. Officers named include chairman Mrs H B McDowell and vice chair Miss Mattie Hanns.
Mrs. W. B. Cline president of the County Federation of Women's Clubs calls an executive board meeting for Thursday from 4 to 5 PM at the Carnegie Library club rooms. Attendees include directors A Bow, Tyler Haswell, M R Bentley, Fred Jones. officers Astin Walton Fuller Eberstadt Wimberley. and club representatives from Bryan Reading Music Study Campus Study and Extension Service clubs.
Prison officials report about 1 580 convicts seized guards and the principal keeper George Durnford during a mutiny at Auburn state prison. State troopers and National Guard units used tear gas and gas bombs as they cleared the main hall rescuing Jennings and four guards. One convict was reported injured in the hours before dawn.
In Lubbock county a jury sentenced Clay Lester to 99 years after finding him guilty of murdering his wife, 35, amid a six hour deliberation. Lester expressed disgust and said he should have been acquitted or sentenced to the electric chair.
Application for sewer extension in the Beck Street section was signed by M. E. Wallace and the city commission. Action on Rhode Island installation has been deferred as a plan for sewer improvers in that area is worked out. City authorities say extending the sewer lines to serve this area is now impossible.
A Liberty County man. John Swilley, granted a new trial by the court of criminal appeals after an indictment for murder used voluntary killing instead of the malice and aforethought language required by the 1927 law redefining murder. The ruling hinges on the indictment wording under the new statute and potential overpunishment.
