J D Martin received a letter from his brother Ed who was called into service Monday. The group left Houston and arrived in Norfolk Virginia, where they were greeted by a welcome party. Ed noted the men rode to the training station by boat and have begun issued their uniforms. Ed Martin Will Lyons Noah Cole and Claude Lawson are cited with their respective company numbers in the same note. Best regards were sent to Bryan friends.

London dispatch reports General Haig's forces attacked from Lens to northeast of Lens, driving through the German first line along the entire front. British progress described as satisfactory with all front attacks advancing.

Congress to Authorize $9 Billion for War Costs

Secretary McAdoo told Congress leaders that an extra $9 billion in war expenditures will be needed through June 30, 1918, with loans to allies. Bonds totaling five billion have been authorized and a $2 billion war tax bill is pending in the Senate. The Ways and Means Committee will meet August 26 to push financial legislation and outline anew bond issuance and tax advances. The plan spreads the $9 billion across this session and the next, with remaining funds to be approved in December.
