Dr. T O Walton told 3 000 farmers at College Station that America is becoming a nation of non homeowners. He cited Census figures showing 7 000 000 rented or mortgaged homes from 24 000 000 total homes and urged state and national action beyond advice to curb this trend.

Paris August 8 Maurice Droughin the French aviator filed suit to compel Charles Levine to honor the July contract. Droughin was chosen to pilot Levine's monoplane Columbia on the Atlantic flight from Paris to New York.
A black man suspected of fatally shooting the Weatherby family near Clarendon Texas on June 24 is under arrest in Shreveport Louisiana. He was armed when captured.
Cotton futures quoted 89 to 98 points higher while a new quote from Bryan shows 16.12 cents per pound.
Citizens Athletic Committee meets in Bryan as W S Howell is named chairman and Ty Cobb secretary. The group outlines season tickets and a class A Interscholastic League entry with a finance and auditing panel and a businesslike plan modeled after A and M and Texas. Members present include Howell, McKenzie, Farmer, Durham, Armstrong, and Cobb.
Herbert Hoover comments on President Coolidge's announcement and states he believes Coolidge should be nominated and reelected, a stance he first voiced in Chicago two weeks earlier. Hoover expresses regret at the suggestion but maintains his position.
The body of Taylor Odom, 28, one of 19 prisoners who escaped Sunday from Imperial State Prison Farm near Sugarland, was recovered from the Brazos River near a farm yesterday, official at the prison announced today.
The Intermediate Department boys of the First Baptist Sunday School enjoyed a camp outing Tuesday night along the Navasota River led by D. L. Wilson and J. H. Binny. They returned to Bryan this afternoon with many and wonderful camp stories.
Alpine reports for the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society semi annual meeting set for August 6 1927 at Sul Ross State Teachers College. The society formed in 1926 and held its first annual meeting March 5 1927 to collect preserve materials and scientific value.
CHOUDRANT La August 3 J A Ward Breckenridge Texas was seriously injured here today when a car carrying relatives to visit a seriously ill kin in Monroe collided with another vehicle. Mrs Laura Parker Howe Parker driver of the other car and Mrs J A Ward were badly hurt. M J Cavanaugh Ruston La driver of the second car also was badly injured.
Abilene prepares for 50 000 visitors as Col Charles A Lindbergh stops at Kin solv ing Field for an hour en route from El Paso to Fort Worth on his Guggenheim aviation tour. Mayor Hayden oversees the program with chamber and city backing.
L. A. Koenig of Bryan suffered a fracture of the left leg when his automobile collided with another vehicle near Eureka Pines on the Hempstead road about 3 30 p m Monday. He was taken to St Josephs infirmary in a Houston Undertaking company ambulance. The other driver sustained no injuries.

Geneva August 3 Delegates at the naval conference planned to meet to discuss the new situation arising from the Japanese compromise plan. Conference circles still believed a treaty could be drawn up at Geneva depending on the British Cabinet decision in London today.
An election is ordered for September 6 to amend the city charter to allow public utilities revenue to fund city schools and cemetery maintenance. Superintendent Harry L. Durham and John M. Caldwell urged support, noting likely surplus net revenue with well maintained utilities and a goal to keep taxes low. Bids for water main materials will be opened August 21. The commission also approves sewerage extension in James and Caldwell subdivisions. Attending were Mayor Wilson Bradley and aldermen H A Burger L L McGinnis D L Wilson J Bryan Miller Guy P Bittle F L Henderson Harry L. Durham and J M Caldwell.
Dr. W. B. Lanham now of the U S Department of Agriculture heads a cotton survey authorized by the Mayfield bill. The initial study covers the South Plains and Southwestern Oklahoma with Georgia in a later phase. L. E. Dowd leads the Dallas office with Prof. Sam McMillan and R F Skillman and W R Jeffries assisting.
J. B. Hicks and his two sons Travis and Rudolph of Jacksonville, Cherokee county, attended Short Course. Hicks arranged for Rudolph to enter A. and M. College next year as an agriculture student. Hicks formerly lived in Brazos County and left about ten years ago.
The New York market fell sharply on August 3 as selling surged after President Coolidge said he would not seek re election. The downturn was brief as stocks then staged a strong rebound, erasing most losses and pushing some issues to new highs.
Gov. Dan Moody on Tuesday spoke on the post election scene noting the road to justice is long and costly with congested dockets slowing courts. He said neither amendment succeeded due to lethargy and corporate opposition, urging tax reform to ease farmer and homeowner burdens.
Abilene August 3 W P Stanage superintendent of the sheep and goat department reports 189 animals entered for the West Texas Fair to run September 26 to October 1. He recently visited Kerrville district signing up eleven breeders. He expects at least 300 head by opening day as interest grows and the building may need enlarging.

Jackson Mississippi August 3 Theodore Bilbo continued to expand his margin over incumbent Dennis Murphee as returns from the Democratic primary came in. With about half the precincts counted Bilbo held a 22 000 vote advantage in the race for the gubernatorial nomination.
W Boyd Gatewood resigns as private secretary to Gov Dan Moody and moves to Houston to join the Post Dispatch. In Temple Pat U H Dougherty City Attorney is appointed private secretary to Gov Moody, arriving in Austin. successor to Dougherty as City Attorney to be named by Temple City Commissioners.
The College Avenue Baptists hosted a banquet praising their Sunday School Baseball League champions. Toastmaster Hon. W. S. Barron spoke as officials lauded the team for spirit and teamwork. Norman Dansby was elected 1928 team manager amid a list of player attendees and speakers including Marsh Bullock and Ty Cobb.
Rev R E Day pastor of First Baptist in this city has a father Rev E Day aged over 80 years who was struck with apoplexy while conducting a revival near his home. Mrs Day and family left by car to join Rev Day in Huntsville and then visit his father at his bedside. The elder Day was holding a rural revival at the time of the stroke.
Washington reports night speculation over President Coolidge not running in 1928. With Coolidge out, politicians gauge Hoover Dawes Lowden Longworth Borah and others as possible nominees while uncertainty dominates party strategy and campaigning plans.
Mrs Elon Stuart chairman calls a PTA cafeteria finance committee meeting for Thursday at 9 30 AM at Mrs H B McDowell home. Members expected include Mrs B A Sims Mrs Charley Andrews Mrs Aldridge Mrs Albert Buchanan Mrs Elon Stuart Mrs H B McDowell and Mrs Morris Tatum. Plans aim to renovate and equip the High School Cafeteria before school reopens.
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Bullock of Allanreed arrive in Brazos County to help during the illness of William Powers, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Powers of Steep Hollow. The Powers family used to live in Bryan and plan to return home Saturday. Mr. Powers works for Humble Oil and believes Allanreed’s oil field may become one of the state’s best. Allanreed lies 60 miles from Borger, near the McLean field where oil flows within six miles of the town.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Reynolds of Dallas visit Mrs Reynolds parents Mr and Mrs J M Crane in Roan's Prairie. They attend the upcoming marriage of Miss Elouise Cone to Otho Ransetter of Houston at the Cone family home Thursday evening August 4. The couple plans to return to Bryan and then Dallas.
Boston August 3 Governor Schuller delayed a council meeting on the Sacco Vanzetti case until tomorrow while announcing the governor would reveal his decision tonight on the fate of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti.
Seven Bryan high school football players train year round and study Red Grange as a model. The Western Public Service Company employs five of them: Sam Trant, Mike Barron, Cecil Martin, Dick Ramsey, and Horace Dansby. The Stephan Ice Company has two players Curtis Cobb and Lee Smith.
Tokyo reports that Captain William Erwin of the American Army has received informal permission from the Japanese government to land on Japanese soil as he plans a trans Pacific flight. The approval came via the American embassy at the request of the U.S. Department of State.
San Antonio reports Congressman John N. Garner predicts the 70th Congress will be Republican controlled with President Coolidge. He argues tariff legislation is unlikely before the 1928 election and, in a proposed shift, favors easing tariffs on agricultural products, while considering reductions on steel and aluminum. Garner plans to return to Washington late October and stay through July.
