Rebels trapped in Jimenez figh t to retreat as federal forces tighten grip. Bridges out of town burned and rail retreat blocked. Federal planes bombarded rebels with heavy strikes as government claims victory and hopes for collapse of the movement in Chihuahua. Rebel losses estimated at about 600. Continued on page 4.
Dear Brazos County Friends reports a good ground condition with planting planned for May or June. Farmers expect more acres to go to cotton while feed is in demand. Mules command strong prices and tractors rise in use. The letter notes the death of E. A. Shirley on March 15 and extends sympathy to Steep Hollow and Reliance relatives.
Mrs Locke McNeeley Mrs T R Nelson Mrs Jim Riley and Mrs J B Reese of this city returned from Austin where they attended the Twentieth annual meeting of the Austin District Woman's Missionary Union at East Avenue Baptist church April 1 2. Milton E Davis and Norman T Kinne of the Lawrence Motor Co returned from a two day Nash dealers meeting in San Antonio. Mrs Mills P Walker Easter visit in Austin with her daughter Miss Lily Rush Walker a University of Texas architecture student.
Gold Star health buttons will be given to county school children who meet five health standards throat dental vision weight and smallpox vaccination. Miss Ella Bandelin will award the buttons during May Day programs as exams determine eligible students in both rural and Bryan city schools.
The Christian Endeavor Society of the Free Baptist church held its semi annual business meeting to elect new officers. Miss Glada Maye Trant, retiring president, led the meeting as chair. New officers include Mrs. Char lie Moehlman president Nathan Van vice president Mrs. Willie Johnson treasurer Mrs. Walter Holmes recording secretary Mrs. Norman Kinne corresponding secretary Miss Gladys Shaw pianist Mrs. Jack Bullard chairman prayer meeting committee Mrs. Dela Wooten chairman lookout committee Earle Tatum chairman pledge committee Mrs. H. S. Edge chairman social committee and Miss Glada Maye Trant publicity chairman.
Leo Daniels a Bry an electrician joins Pa cent Reproducer Corporation of New York to install Vitaphone equipment in Texas and Oklahoma theatres. This week he visits Hobart Oklahoma City and other points in the region. Daniels helped engineer J E Tahara bring Vitaphone to the Palace theatre in Bryan and is now employed by the New York firm. The division covers Texas Oklahoma Arkansas and Louisiana.
C B Holzman of Conroe is today checked in as station agent for the Missouri Pacific to replace J I Heard who was transferred to Conroe. Holzman has 23 years service with the railroad and is brother of W B Holzman comptroller at A and M College. He and his family rent the Dansby house on East 24th Street near Sue Haswell Memorial Park.
Governor Moody announced the resignation of Col. R. H. Baker of Houston from the state prison board. Baker said he had been contemplating resigning for some time and submitted his resignation today in Austin on April 3.
The cotton market opened weaker with futures closing 25 points lower and local spot prices slipping about a quarter cent from 18 12 to 19.
Nacogdoches April 3 A jury found Will Tindle guilty of slaying J N Ainsworth last year and sentenced him to 45 years in the penitentiary after a two day trial that went to the jury last night.
Governor Moody vetoed the anti bolter measure authored by Senator A J Wirtz of Seguin. The bill would have empowered the Democratic executive committee to bar voters and candidates who voted for Hoover in the last election. Moody warned it would prolong Democratic party bitterness and harm state welfare by widening the breach within the party.
A fire in Dallas destroyed two Rogers Lumber and Manufacturing Company buildings causing about 100000 dollars in damage. Fireman Walter Moore was injured by falling timber.
Moody today vetoed the Sunday motion picture bill. The measure would have repealed a portion of the Sunday blue sky laws allowing shows on the Sabbath after one o clock.
Verbal tilts mark the start of a Texas House Appropriations Committee hearing on the Texas A and M budget. A Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association committee pressed for a livestock memorial building at A and M and a $25,000 revolving fund for research, alongside budgets for North Texas Junior Agricultural College in Arlington and John Tarleton Junior Agricultural College in Stephenville.

Henry Book man of Limestone county was granted a new trial today by the court of criminal appeals after a death sentence for the killing of his wife.
George Chance urges Bryan residents to fully meet their duties during the East Texas Chamber of Commerce convention May 5 to 7. He recalls the railroad’s loss when neighbors limited effort by others and advises every citizen take an office to do their full duty regardless of neighbors.
Evander Gandy aged 83 died after a lingering illness at 8:30 this morning at the home of his daughter Mrs R M Dansby on West 28th Street. Born in Mississippi he served in the Confederate Army and later moved to Texas in 1883 living in Brazos county for 46 years. He is survived by four daughters and three sons with funeral services set at Wellborn Methodist church Thursday at 4 o clock with burial in Wellborn cemetery under McCulloch Dansby funeral directors.
At St. Andrews Episcopal Church Guild weekly meeting last Monday members approved paying 1200 in four annual installments to liquidate parish debt. Each member pledged to recruit one new guild member and to present a deaf mute priest with a black silk cassock as an ordination gift.
E H Astin vice president and general chairman outlined convention plans for the East Texas Chamber of Commerce in Bryan May 5 6 7 after a Houston directors meeting. The group urged a special legislative session to adopt road taxation measures and expressed confidence in the chamber’s highway policy prevailing despite the regular session’s inaction.
