Edward Orphan confessed to police that since last April he committed seven highway robberies and set arson on at least as many buildings. He said the fires burned from a desire to see flames and cited poor loot from victim F. C. Fletcher as a motive. An associate’s suspicion led to his arrest.
A European merchant, arriving in Sofia, reports severe abuses in Monastir vilayet. Hilmi Pasha’s administration is blamed for daily Turkish soldier atrocities including desecration, theft, and threats of mass murder, with 70,000 displaced and consuls unable to aid residents.
United States District Attorney Beach announced six individuals named and seven indictments by the grand jury. Geo W Beavers ex chief of salaries in the post office, August W Machen former general superintendent free delivery, James W Erwin ex postoffice inspector, George H Huntington and Isaac S McGiehan of Columbia Supply New York, and Eugene D Scheble of Toledo are implicated. Beavers Machen and Erwin face a conspiracy to defraud the United States. Additional indictments name McGahan Huntington Machen for conspiracy to defraud the United States and for conspiracy to bribery.
George W. Beavers former head of salaries in the postal service was arraigned on a federal conspiracy to defraud charge before Commissioner Hitchcock in New York. He posted a $5000 bond for Sept 15 appearance after a Brooklyn grand jury indictment.
In Camden Tennessee on September 11 two men, Alex Lindsay and Dougherty, were killed after assaulting an elderly farmer D Stockdale in his field with brass knuckles. Deputies Horace Akers and Newt Lindsay encountered the assailants who fired. both men were killed. Stockdale is in precarious condition.
Terrible storm sweeps the country damaging land and sea facilities. Dover breakwater washed away causing large losses. London suburbs littered with debris as lifeboat rescues occur and fatalities noted. In the U S Judge Hiram H. Carver dies at seventy four in Crowley Louisiana.
Washington reports Minister Leischman secured the release of Abdul Kader Matheny, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Tripoli Syria. He had been sentenced to six months in Smyrna jail by the U.S. consular court at Beirut for a prior offense and faced three and a half years in Tripoli. Leischman protested the earlier conviction as a rights violation.
General Passenger Agent Anderson announces a special fully equipped train from New Orleans to Los Angeles and San Francisco for the American Bankers association meeting October 20 to 23. New York bankers will reach New Orleans by steamer October 12 and join the New Orleans delegation which leaves October 13 by vestibule train for San Francisco.
Washington Sept 11 The government has begun extradition actions for Leonold J Stern a Baltimore contractor indicted for conspiracy in a postal contract who disappeared and was located recently in Toronto Canada Post Office Inspector Walter S Mayer of Chicago traveled to Toronto to confer with the crown's attorney and the American consul.
In National League action the Nashville club reached third base in a contest at New Orleans where New Orleans beat Montgomery 6 to 0. Pittsburg defeated Brooklyn 3 to 0 at Pittsburg. In Philadelphia first game New York won 5 to 3 over Philadelphia and second game New York 8 Philadelphia 1. In American League play Boston defeated Washington 3 to 0 at Boston and New York edged Philadelphia 5 to 2 in New York.
Sedalia Missouri Sept 11 After a two days conference at Parsons Kansas between officers of the Missouri Kansas and Texas Railroad company and committees representing its employees an agreement was reached whereby fifty per cent of the employees in the Sedalia shops are granted an increase of 10 cents a day The increase is not satisfactory to the men.
Miss Alice Roosevelt rode the submarine Moccasin at Newport R I and surfaced after a brief submersion. The vessel went down in shallow water and she safely disembarked after the demonstration.
In Little Rock Arkansas the team beat Nashville 4 to 0. The win marked Little Rock's fourth consecutive shutout and set a Southern League record. Only one deflected ball altered the runless streak.
