Sailor Turned Congressman Jerry Simpson Dies at 83
Native of New Brunswick and long time Kansan leader, Jerry Simpson died at 6:05 am in Wichita after a lingering illness. He served in the Twelfth Illinois infantry, captained vessels, and rose as a Populist and three term congressman from Kansas Seventh district. Known as Sockless Jerry for his fiery farm policy stances, he led a remarkable political ascent and later ran real estate ventures in Roswell New Mexico. He was born March 31 1842 in New Brunswick and served in Congress 1891-1895 and 1897-1899.
