First Rural Free Delivery in Mansfield Town
A front letters tale from Mansfield Conn recalls the first rural free delivery. A grandmother’s husband, a Revolutionary War veteran, faced a cruel post rider who charged for a letter. The letter returned to her with the rider’s mistaken vengeance, then the new post rider delivered the letter, marking Mansfield’s inaugural rural free delivery. The piece blends family memory with addenda from period publications and a note on good manners.
