Shanley Succumbs in Yellow Fever Fight at Bayou Barrataria
Dr C M Shanley a North Dakota physician who moved to a tea plantation on Bayou Barrataria died after a relapse from yellow fever. He had volunteered to aid authorities during the outbreak ministering to the sick and supplying his steam launch for relief efforts. His death follows weeks of illness and a brief return to field work despite illness. He was a thirty second degree Mason and was mourned across Jefferson parish and New Orleans for sacrifices in the plague's victims. The week’s yellow fever cases trended downward with 17 new cases and 1 death citywide. reports from nearby towns added several more cases and deaths.
