Miners Force Train Carrying Negroes To Tower Hill
In Pana and Tower Hill Illinois on October 1 as many as 800 miners halted a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train carrying 60 imported black workers. Armed men compelled unloading and marched them toward Tower Hill to ship them back to Washington. Sheriff Coburn led 100 deputies and 500 miners toward Tower Hill to intervene. National Guard units arrived with Gatling guns and Springfield rifles. Governor Tanner ordered arms held until further orders and to protect citizens without aiding mine operators. By nightfall, calm prevailed though tensions remained high.
