The attorney general rejects a Brazos river levee bond plan in Burleson county citing drainage law limits. J B Butler, active in Brazos bottom holdings, anticipates legislative action next session and says work will proceed when feasible despite delays.
Last Saturday we received draft for 1015 dollars payable to John B. Mike for fire loss adjusted the prior Wednesday. Yesterday we paid 148.40 to D. Munday for fire damage adjusted with Mike. Also paid 2000 to Mrs. M W Ford for residence and furniture, adjustment sent last Friday. Report urges insuring public to place policies and assures prompt adjustments. In Bryan Texas on November 24 1908 a letter reports the attorney general will not approve proposed drainage district bonds lacking authority to levy levees under current law. Legislature may authorize under a late Constitutional Amendment, delaying work until January. The Rentfrow stock company plays at the Opera House with The Clay Baker and The Great Milky Way ahead with a Thanksgiving matinee and a children’s top matinee. A new National Cotton Association was formed with Harvie Jordan of Atlanta as president and Lee Richardson of Vicksburg as treasurer. The group aims to organize every cotton growing county, expand warehouse capacity, improve financing and create a statistics bureau on daily crop conditions. The main office will be in Atlanta and a meeting of the Merchants Association is planned in Brazos County to promote membership and cooperation.
