Death toll soars in Hilda wreck off French coast
London and South Western Railway reports 128 dead from the steamer Hilda disaster off northern France. Among victims are 21 saloon passengers, 80 French onion sellers, and 27 crew. Only one seaman, James Gunter, survived after clinging to a mast as boats proved useless in the high seas. The Hilda struck at 10 pm. the ship broke apart seven minutes later. The Ada rescued survivors at dawn after 12 hours adrift.

Taft Declares Philippines Must Be Ours Generations More
Secretary of War William H. Taft spoke at the Commercial club banquet in Kansas City on the Philippines urging that the islands remain under U S control for more than a generation. He suggested legislators may not live to see separation while the Philippines prosper. The event marked the anniversary of the John Jay Commercial treaty with seating for 600 at the Midland hotel ballroom.

Patrick case advances in court of appeals
Another phase of the Patrick murder case was heard in the New York Court of Appeals as defense attorneys seek technical rulings to aid an appeal to the Supreme Court. The panel considered whether the remittal to the district attorney should reflect that the appeals court denied the contention that the conviction violated due process of law. The court reserved decision.

Salton Sea gale damages rails cutting communications
In Los Angeles on November 21 a coastal gale drove Salton Sea waters into huge breakers that damaged railroad tracks and cut off all communication along the Southern Pacific line. The railway had just completed protections against river inflow from the Colorado.

The American Federation endorsed the eight hour day for printers and allowed continued aid to printers through January 1. About 268 cities in the US and Canada reportedly adopted the eight hour day. A four cent per member assessment was ordered to raise about eighty thousand dollars for the Typographical Union. The fifty cent assessment by the ITU was approved 25 948 to 6 334. Delegates Johnson and Goldstein attacked the IWW and Socialists while Victor Berger and Max Hayes defended their positions.

Death of Major Simon Mayer in Accident at Newton
Newton Miss November 21 Major Simon Mayer adjutant general on General Chalmers staff with Sharpe's brigade in the Confederate army was killed accidentally when his revolver slipped from under his pillow and fired into his right ear. He was sixty eight years old and left a large family.
