Two thousand lives lost in the Euphrates town of Selazgherd near Erzeropon as the quake collapses 500 houses and kills over eighty soldiers in the garrison. Telegraph newsman injured. his wife and sister killed in the catastrophe.
Two men drowned while attempting to cross the swollen Arkansas River. Rescue efforts were hampered by treacherous currents and rising water levels. Police and local authorities investigated the incident and identified the victims.
Four men die when a skiff capsizes while transporting mail on the Arkansas river at Tamaha Indian Territory. Two survivors reach shore after a hard swim in a strong current. names include Henry Id and Jeff Vick.
London foreign office reports from the British consul at Ezeroom describe a thirty second quake on April 29 across the district between Lake Van and the Russian frontier and as far west as Kharput. Melazgherd with 500 houses was destroyed. Colonel Khalif Bey and eighty soldiers perished. Lt. Col. Targib Bey family also died and went insane. telegraph operator injured while his wife and sister were killed. Relief subscriptions are requested for destitute Muslims and Christians in the district.
Captain J K Wiggins reports a prison relocation at Ushuah in Argentina where fifty inmates escaped, taking arms and terrorizing locals. Daily murders mount as authorities order shots on sight. A reward is offered for tribal heads in the interior. Other travelers report wrecks along Terra del Fuego shore and a British bark breakup nearby.
A Oklahoma storm causes extensive railway damage across the state. Choctaw and Santa Fe lines report long track losses near El Reno and between Newkirk and Kaw City, with service disrupted for days. Bridges over the Cimarron and Washita rivers fail, halting Rock Island and Frisco routes while others face water and washouts.
The War Department reports mailroom cases including former Tacloban Postmaster Milne accused of stealing $2000 in coin and allegedly vanishing a 400-pound safe. Milne had blamed discharged soldiers in Teacolan, but investigations cleared them and led to his arrest.
In Chicago on May 28 M. Leopold Mabilleau labeled American college professors as hired men in cages, noting that privately founded institutions limit academic freedom under trustees. He, director of Musee Sociale, spoke on governing ideas of public education. A separate incident reports a Texas train near-fatal collision near Jones City.
In Cleveland on May 28 Senator Hanna accepted a flood of telegrams about his decision not to oppose endorsing President Roosevelt for a second term at the state convention. The messages were largely congratulatory and praised his move for preserving party harmony.
Dr. John Grant delivered the welcome address to the Texas Oil Mill Superintendents association. A large turnout attended the event in Sherman. In a gesture of Sherman hospitality, an elegant gavel was presented to the convention. The president pro tem J. J. Theissen formed committees.
In Kaufman Texas on May 28 the Terrell rifle team maintains air defense while Johnson shows improvement. The victim remains in deplorable condition with severe facial injuries and a severely swollen throat. she is described as delicate and unable to speak clearly.
In Jackson Kentucky on May 28 the pursuit of the Marcum murder was halted to allow examination of Cockrill case witnesses. Twelve Cockrill witnesses have been examined with seventy five more to be heard. A Hotchkiss gun and ammunition arrived from Louisville for the force.
Advices from Liberia announce that Arthur Barclay was recently elected president of the republic. The report comes from London dated May 28.
London dispatch says the Irish Department of Agriculture will organize a special exhibition of Irish industries for the St Louis exposition. The move aims to showcase Irish manufacturing and crafts to international audiences.
Park Bank and Trust Company, located in Beaumont, has been organized with capital stock of 100000 dollars. The formation marks a new financial institution in the city with plans to operate as a local banking facility.
