A New York stonemason was dragged into a carriage by two masked men who forced him to seal up a wall opening containing a wounded Mahometan woman. The attackers fled. police search Mahometan quarter for location and evidence of the crime.
May 11 Atlanta. The National Conference of Charities and Correction began with an invocation by Rabbi David Marx D D of Atlanta. Dr J T Searcy, head of the state hospital for the insane at Tuscaloosa Ala, spoke on the class of mental defectives for which the state should provide and how. Professor Charles R Henderson of the University of Chicago reported on a Detroit conference committee on workingmen's insurance and charity.
Four of seven presidents of the Lee Yup society are jailed on conspiracy to murder charges targeting 300 Chinatown members seeking English education. Confessions by Gee Hongon and Lee Ying surface as others flee or await arrest. Authorities say See Yup leaders supplied information on gambling in Chinatown.
A Sunday blaze in Ottawa wiped out about 250 houses leaving around 2000 people homeless. Financial loss nears 500000 dollars with insurance covering roughly half. Investigators doubt an incendiary origin as 10 to 15 million feet of lumber and several stores and dwellings burned. no fatalities reported.
Judge Scott refused Ed Stephenson’s request for a receiver to force payment claims against the Texas Telephone company. A receiver was appointed for the Texas Electrical company, which merged Texas Telephone lines, to determine any amounts due to the connecting firm. The Independent Telephone company remains under current management.

A large blaze in Ottawa destroys hundreds of houses and millions of feet of lumber near the Hull fire site. John White, recently released from prison for arson, was captured near the start point and to be charged. Loss estimated at about 609000 dollars with main damage to brick buildings and stores.
A section of the Flat Top mines prison kitchen burned and nine convicts escaped. They robbed a telegraph operator at the nearby railroad station and bound him before ransacking the station. The signal light caused a South bound train to stop. One escapee is captured. others are at large with a hunt underway. The Flat Top mines are run by Sloss Sheffield Coal and Iron company with convicts leased from the state.
Southern train No. 12 jumped the track one mile west of White Pine. Engineer Robert B. Holloman of Knoxville died crushed beneath his engine. Eight injured, rail damage over 200 feet, six hour delay. No cause given. Also Fort Worth note: Woman's Christian Temperance union elected officers led by Helen B. Stoddard.

A La Grange firm secured an injunction to bar Grayson county from adopting local option, blocking county commissioners court actions. Denison figures L Eppstein and Colonel I M Standifer were in town last Saturday.
