Burglars Take Negotiable Securities From Leiter Office
At Chicago on May 7 burglars forced entry to Joseph Leiter’s office, blew two vaults, and stole negotiable securities valued between 10 000 and 25 000 dollars. Clerks later estimated 100 000 to 150 000 dollars might be involved, but manager Hugh Crabbe identified a 125 000 dollar bond as not stolen. Doors opened with chisels and curtains were pulled down as robbers inspected bonds to separate negotiable from non negotiable. Nearby Crowe law offices also hit for about 5 000 dollars. The thieves used a sledge to enter, possibly muffled, and papers lay scattered with a lone bond left behind.
