Distinguished surgeon Dr Lorenz is welcomed in New Orleans as a highly appreciated visitor. The event highlights his medical achievements and the warm reception from local physicians and civic leaders.
The American Medical association sections met in New Orleans on May 6 with seven forenoon and a dozen afternoon sessions. Dr Adolph Lorenz appeared as a guest amid applause while papers by Drs Bracken and Wilbur and Hon W A King spurred calls for greater vital statistics collaboration. Resolutions urged census bureau cooperation to improve death causes, and other reports addressed patent medicines and future meeting sites in Birmingham and New Orleans.
In Baltimore the Democratic candidate Robert M. McLean led Frank M. Wachter by 520 votes with four precincts uncounted due to judge disputes. Republicans won comptroller and president of the second city council branch, while Democrats hold the first branch, controlling the joint ballot and city register.
Captain James Tunnell of the Saginaw, sunk by the Hamilton off Virginia, was brought to Philadelphia from Norfolk. He has fractured ribs, a badly lacerated hand, internal injuries, and severe shock. Chief Engineer Selzer said officials will issue a statement once Tunnell can provide an official account.
A terrible collision occurred as two steamships met in heavy fog, causing damage and prompting harbor authorities to launch a response. Crews coordinated rescue efforts despite limited visibility and shifting currents.
A dense fog shrouded Virginia coastal waters when the Old Dominion liner Hamilton collided with the Clyde line steamship Saginaw about 180 miles south of New York. Twenty lives were lost as the Saginaw sank, while the Hamilton rescued some survivors but remained uninjured aside from bow damage.
Fort Smith reports Colonel Oscar L. Miles, Iron Mountain counsel, severely cut H. W. Engle a Pullman car conductor at the railway station after Engle allegedly insulted him. Engle and a porter intervened. Miles says he acted to prevent an assault. Miles is a leading Arkansas attorney.
London reports a great popular welcome for King Edward as he arrived from Portsmouth. The capital’s approaches were crowded and Buckingham Palace displayed flags while the king, greeted by the Prince of Wales and Field Marshal Lord Roberts, inspected the guard and moved to the palace in good health. A Madrid dispatch notes a rumor that the pretender may have been assassinated at Zelonan.
