Free Homestead Bill Passes Congress With Endowments
The House approved the free homestead bill allowing patents to bona fide settlers on open Indian lands. It finances purchase payments to Indians and redirects endowment funds from public land sales to agricultural colleges. Notable support came from Galusha Grow, praised for authoring the original bill 48 years earlier, with further debate by several representatives. Private pension bills followed, and Hawaii appointments were discussed.
