A massive rockslide from Turtle Mountain struck the Frank mines near Vancouver, killing one miner’s wife and six children while freeing fifteen trapped workers. Nineteen men were inside. two died and fifteen escaped after cutting through debris. The mine remains intact and air supplies have recovered.
A. F Brown state manager for Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance and H B Taylor visited Birmingham's county jail to identify William A Hunt known as Hunter. Brown testified Hunt allegedly feigned death to allow relatives to collect a $15 000 policy from 1896. Hunt did not deny being the intended insured.
In Tyler Texas on April 30 four additional convictions for violation of the local option law were recorded in county court. One ex-saloon keeper admitted guilt in two cases with tears in court. He faces sixty days on the poor farm and a $300 fine.
Attorney George A Mansfield reports a Washington telegram announcing the court of claims decision favorable to the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations in the Chickasaw freedman case. Secretary Hitchcock suspends the Tahlequah land office removal until May 6 when he will review the matter in person. Roads convention in St Louis elects officers including Richardson and Huttis.
The boundary bill passed finally in the House and the Senate concurred in House amendments. It now goes to the governor. A free conference committee handled the land bill with members Talbot Hudson Pickett Nowlin Jackson Hill Hicks Paulus Cain and Savage. The railroad commission discussed charter forfeiture but made no decision. Chairman Storey was called away due to the death of an old law partner in Lockhart, possibly delaying final action.
New York April 10 Mrs Levi 4 Leiter and her daughter 188 Daisy Leiter arrived aboard the Oceanic after nearly a year away. A rough voyage included a deck sea strike that knocked Mrs Leiter toward the rails but she was saved by fellow passengers. Both women endured seasickness most of the trip. Mrs Leiter called the Delhi durbar visit grand and magnificent.
In Terre Haute Indiana on April 30 a westbound Vardalia passenger train collided with a switch engine. Three people died Clarence Reinhart Nicholas Lutz and Alexander McMullen all from Columbus Ohio. A 27 person Philadelphia YMCA convention party rode in the special car and a New Jersey delegation rode in another car. no gentlemen in either party were hurt.
In Frankfort Kentucky on April 30 a jury found James Howard guilty of murder in the William Goebel case and fixed the penalty at life imprisonment. After initial disagreement the judge sent the jurors back for further deliberations and they reported again at 11 o clock.
Henry Reber twenty years old of Jersey City N J died in a hospital from hydrophobia after a bull dog bite five months earlier He showed concern for his family saying he felt mad and did not want to harm anyone while noting a urge to bite someone He was moved to the hospital where the disease progressed rapidly.
In South Boston, on April 30, workers Robert Reddy and William Donnelly perished when part of an old building under demolition collapsed. Reddy died instantly. Donnelly's body was recovered after a prolonged search among the rubble.
An April 30 explosion at the Cresson Powder Company works near Williamsburg Blair County Altoona Pennsylvania fatally injures six workers and injures many others. The works manager is among the injured.
