Two catastrophic events trap or claim lives underground as fatalities mount and rescue operations scramble to reach injured workers. Local officials report grim losses while safety investigators inspect air quality and collapse risks across the site.
An firedamp blast in the Kleinrosseln coal mine near Forbach Germany killed sixty five miners and injured twelve. Eighty were at work in the gallery when the explosion occurred. Cause is not yet known. The mine belongs to Herr Wente, a National Liberal Reichstag member. In the Gerhard mine near Saarlouis two dozen were killed when a cage shaft cable broke.
L Z Russell editor of the Ardmore Morning Democrat, jailed four years for killing Colonel J W Hawkins in Lawton Oklahoma, is freed as Comanche county grand jury fails to return a second indictment after voiding the initial one. Hawkins was ex policeman and sergeant at arms of the territorial house. The case arose from a city political contest and Russell was tried for murder at Anadarko, convicted of manslaughter. The grand jury reconsidered the case here.
London March 16 Three large warehouses in Finsbury London's industrial center were gutted by fire causing about 1 000 000 dollars in damage. The blaze began in Featherstone street at Cox and Co hot manufacturers then spread to Maxine company wood turners and to Green and Co shoe makers. High winds hampered efforts but after three hours firefighters stopped the fire.
The Atlantic express on the Grand Trunk railway from Chicago to Port Huron collided with a freight train after hitting an open switch at Bancroft Michigan five miles from Durand. Five persons were killed or fatally injured while engineer A B Schram and fireman Frank Cowan of Battle Creek suffered broken limbs and severe scalds. J F Smith of Dowagiac and Mrs D Shook and Ruth Shook of Lansing were severely burned with several passengers sustaining minor injuries.

In Wichita March 16 Judge Pollock instructed the jury to return a verdict for Rock Island Railway in the cases of Wichita merchants suing over cotton goods rates from Galveston to Wichita. Merchants contended the rate was discriminatory and unreasonable, charging more to Kansas City.
Berlin reports cashier Speyer Mueller of an industrial bank vanished leaving a shortage of 130000 dollars. Depositors fled as word of the defalcation triggered a bank run while authorities pursue the missing funds. In New York John Noble Stearns elder relief pioneer and silk magnate dies at 77. The Hocking River flood near Athens Ohio kills seven in Athens and four elsewhere, with a skiff capsizing causing most drownings. Nelsonville and Trimble report deaths as floods wash away homes, leaving about a thousand homeless and the city briefly in darkness. Water fills streets fifteen feet deep and cuts communications and power.

In Uvalde on March 16 a two year old boy, James Dennis, was accidentally shot and killed by his four year old brother while the family rested in a hack outside a Comfor hotel. The father had left a loaded pistol on the seat and the younger child picked it up and fired. The bullet tore through the sleeping child and blood spattered the mother but she was not hurt.

Lieutenant Wagenstein demonstrated loading technique while H A Stockey described experiments at Fort Brownsville the night of the shooting. Observers said gun flashes failed to illuminate shooters and could not identify those who fired.
