China Seeks U S Help On China Policy
Washington, March 18. An unofficial effort is under way to win U S good offices for China. No official appeal has reached Secretary Hay, who may know the wishes of interested parties. They seek U S instruction to Pekin to warn the empress dowager and declare that American commercial interests require no further leases of Chinese territory. It is unlikely the government will agree. Chinese minister Wu Ting Fang has not received Pekin guidance on the Italian demand and has sought U S attitude. He is pleased that the United States does not seek Chinese territory.
