New Yorks Foreign Trade Falls Sharply in 1898
New York’s foreign commerce for the year ended June 30, 1898, totaled 89,225,756 dollars, a drop of 996,995,416 from the prior year’s 1,036,211,172. The decline, larger than in 1897, reflects traffic diverted to southern ports amid railroad discrimination against New York. American vessels carried 127,793,345 of the trade, foreign bottoms 866,842,275. The national increase offset by New York’s setback suggests broader gains outside the port.
