Cotton rot in fields across Arkansas crops
Reliable reports from cotton counties in the state show much of the 1898 crop unpicked with thousands of bales remaining in fields. On big plantations along the Arkansas river pickers work with plowmen in the same fields. Some cotton was turned into winter pastures as cattle devoured bolls. In Lonoke county large 500 acre fields stand unpicked due to weather and shortage of labor. Much cotton is now worthless and a total loss to planters.
